Car Info: 2000 Jetta TDI GL ( w/ 5-Sp Manual )
Problem: Owner bought car with only the valet key.
The owner now has a new key W/Fob & new battery.
The new key works (engine starts, no issues, no alarms).

The problem:
The new key fob will not communicate with the door locks or the trunk .
The new key will lock & unlock the doors (manually)
The new key will lock & unlock the trunk lid (manually)
We can not lock & unlock the doors or trunk with the fob buttons.

How to I get the car to register the new Fob ?

Key Fob Matching

Hi Vince,
To accomplish that procedure I need a "working Fob" that has the lock & unlock buttons operational.
My situation is that I only have the valet key (which has no lock / unlock buttons).

What do I do now ?

The first part of the procedure does not rely on any currently working remotes, at least as I have used it. You teach the car about the new remote by activating it, once the car has been told to expect it.

I find it works best to first set the number of remotes to "0", save, and then back to "1" and carry on with the rest of the instructions.

The second half of that web page gives alternative instructions for a work-around, if you do have a working remote...can be ignored in your case
