My wife and I first thought we would wait for the fix for our 2013 JSW. We liked the car, it’s been trouble free for 64K miles and it’s our third TDI. After reviewing all the facts and contributing factors we decided to take the buy back (completed today) and here are our reasons.
VW has decided not to market diesels in the US going forward. If you keep your TDI whatever Generation they will slowly diminish in numbers. Whats the support going to be from VW? I can see engine and emission parts becoming hens teeth special order.
HPFP I think this is time bomb. I’m not sure VW has everything settled with this. If it happens it’s costly outside of warranty. A 2001 Jetta we first bought, now with one of our sons, is still going strong after 250K miles, I’m not sure the common rail was the best choice for longevity.
Prior to our experience with TDI’s we owned numerous VW vans, Vanagons and Eurovans, Camper and passenger types. Again VW decided to eliminate these from the US market place. We would still have a VW camper if they were available.
In short VW has abandoned the US market with Vans and Diesels and I don’t trust them with anything going forward. Have already replaced our JSW with a Subaru. Mileage sucks but don’t need snow tires in the winter.
This forum has been a wealth of information and I commend everyone who has contributed on problems and solutions. I have saved thousands by doing my own maintenance with information obtained from the TDI forum. Hopefully some better management will take hold a VW and the Diesel will return to the US.

My 2013 JSW was reliable up until that first emissions flash a few months before all Hades broke loose in 2015. I had nearly 88,000 miles when I turned it in yesterday. This was only my second VW, the first was a used 1971 Super Beetle. I kept the Super Beetle until some redneck rear ended it right after I had the motor rebuilt. I told the salesman that I would check in again in 5 years after they decided what they were going to offer and after reliability improved.

Sometimes, when there are too many question marks, contingencies, and things are on a downhill trajectory, its better to get yourself out of that situation and start fresh elsewhere.

Congrats and good luck.

Check signed by Volkswagen Group of America.

Met appointment to exchange our 2012 Golf Tdi for an on-the-spot check. Deposited $24,377 in the bank today, March 28th, 2017.

I, too, thank the members of this forum for a lot of good exchanges of information during the past five years and wish everyone the best.

I turned mine in the 28th also. Got $21,316. I had saved every service receipt, and had only dealer service. Spent less than $2000 on maint. in 75 months, including a set of tires. It had accumulated over $2000 in body damage (unfixed) when I turned it in, and the buyback guy didn't even mention it. I had to drive the car forward and back one foot while he took 6 pics. The check was ready in the correct amount.
I'll miss that car, and the camaraderie of this website. Thanks to everyone.
Ciao

My 2012 JSW went back yesterday, Payment was just over $21k. Car has been flawless and I will miss it but the cash will by a lot of used car -newer/less miles. Financially the buy back is pretty hard to turn down. The buyback specialist mentioned most people have said the same thing. She also said 99.8% of people have been pretty decent about the whole situation.

Car went back with a few minor door dings but other wise ok, even the maintenance was up to date. It did however go back with a RCD310 vs the 510, steel wheels/covers vs the aluminum wheels, no floor mats, jack, spare and even the factory mud flaps all will find new life on my wife's gasser JSW ;-)

No mention from the buyback specialist on those swapped/missing items.

On the same route for similar reasons. The 2.0 TDI becoming like an orphan 80s peugot is a prospect i did not like when planning to keep the car for decades.

Ive already been down that road with an oddball euro spec german car, and ordering specific widgits from the dealer as the only local source became quite annoying. The other option was getting european enthusiasts to ship things like axles. One basic repair and the car is down for weeks to months.
