...This "Newbie" needs help to join/study the "DARK SIDE" of our TDI(s) !!

After my somewhat rapid experience with:
[1] Timing Belt along with associated pump, rollers, and tensioners
[2] ERG/Diesel "Flapper" Shut-off and Intake Manifold "Bar-B-Q" cleaning projects
[3] Injection Pump "craniotomy" to free up the throttle actuator device that had frozen up
(the "QA"... quantity adjuster).............and now
[4] Throttle Position Sensor / Accelerator; I'm still struggling with trying to gain a clearer
understanding of this "drive-by-wire" component...

OK, I'm finally reaching my point of this new THREAD...
which is to create a "LEARNING DIALOGUE" on the technological language that is critical for us
DIYers to learn IF we are to make a successful transition to these more and more complex automobiles.

JOIN ME... please!
and let me kick things off with a new reference I found this morning while trying to really understand this term:
"READINESS CODE" ! The best I have found is this one at:
http://www1.snapon.com/display/DocMgmtDisplayFile.aspx?fileid=4671 which reads:
=================================
Appendix B: Frequently Asked Questions
What is a readiness code?
A VW/Audi readiness code is the equivalent of an OBD-II readiness
monitor. The diagnostic tests in the charts are designed to run one of the
eight readiness monitors (codes) for specific systems or components.
The scan tool has the capability to command the engine control module
(ECM) to run diagnostic tests that bypass the normal readiness monitor
test-enabling criteria. In most cases, these scan tool-induced monitor
tests can be run with the vehicle stationary or while driving the vehicle on
a short road test.
Readiness code (monitor) status is now part of some state emission
programs. The vehicle will fail if these monitors have not all passed. In
addition, repair work can be validated if readiness code tests are run
successfully. Any tests that do not pass indicate the vehicle is not
operating correctly. Technicians can use these tests as a diagnostic tool
to help pinpoint problem areas.
==================================
Note how this definition correlates this term with an "OBDII Readiness Monitor"...
which was extremely helpful to me!
I suggest that you also go to the Q&A appendix of this very good Snap-On
reference that starts on page 112 of 114 pages.
Even if you do not actively participate in this THREAD's subject,
you can passively do so by simply returning as it evolves and
this FORUM's computer tallies your visit as a "view" !
=========================================
Next I want to study up again about another OBDII term "Drive Cycle" and
then maybe some of the Guru(s) on this FORUM can help us correlate this concept
to the worLd of our VW/Audi "TDI(s)" !

Best regards... in the interest of learning ! ,
Sam Ross
