\"VW Cars recalled\"

Hi ... & apologies for cross-posting on more than 1 forum but the following article appeared in
my local evening newspaper here in Devon, UK!

Anyone know anything about this? I run a '96 B4 Passat tdi Estate and the
inner boot on the rh driveshaft has split. On the other hand, the date range
96-99 for the Passat sounds like the B5 model and they're talking about
"front axles", so it's probably the outer boot.

VW CARS RECALLED

VOLKSWAGEN is recalling 870,000 vehicles worldwide to check front axles for
a potential problem, the company said in Berlin.

The German car maker's recall affects VW Passat models built between 1996
and 1999 as well as Audi A4 and A8 models built between 1994 and 1999 and
Audi A6 models built between 1997 and 1999

The recall is to examine rubber boots on the front axles, which can get
damaged and in some cases cause failure of the bearing arm, Volkswagen said.

\"VW Cars recalled\"

This is most likely related to the Bottom Suspension Arm (Alloy) failure. I have seen 2 of these fail catastrophically on '97 cars with approx 80k on the clock. (A4 and Passat). Havent seee this come up in this forum but its quite a common problem in Ireland (climate + roads).I have images but cannot figure out how to attach. Aftermarket arms are cheaply available due to the demand. Anyone else seen this issue?
