hey guys this is my first post, so please be gentle.

Just bought my 1.9tdi (99) bora had it a few days and everything was fine until yesterday, after a drive 20-30 miles i noticed a tapping noise coming from the drivers side of engine and its getting worse, it doesn't matter how fast or slow i rev its there. it doesn't change if i turn or drive straight.
Few mods on the car as follows, straight through exhaust, dump valve, lowered all round and remap.

any help would be gratefully appreciated!!!

We need more information. Is the noise present with the engine running and with the car in neutral standing still? Does the frequency change with engine RPMs?

We will have to assume that you are in the UK Correct? You should indicate UK in your signature.

1. why a dump valve it is useless on a TDI Really you should save your money for real items that are needed.

2. we really need to know more but did the "tapping" come after you sadly lowered the car?

3. How many miles on the car or KM in your case.

4. When you open the bonnet, or hood here, can you be more specific where the noise is emanating from.

5. The right side if you are UK is where there are most of the whirly bits are. I start with a few alternator, steering pump, Injection pump, A/C unit, crank dampener, But these should chance when the rpm vary.

6. Perhaps it is the fan either side. Question does the noise go away if you turn the A/C off? if not is may be the non-ac fan.

7. OK I will be hard on you once more please get a pint and start reading everything here not necessarily the new car stuff but keep reading. Search will help you too. oh I say again dump the dump valve if you put a 1.8 T in then the dump valve will work.

No, just a little dyslexic and picturing the car from the front…;) I do, however, have a bottle of excellent, old Nicaraguan rum, but that's another story...

Okay, one more time. The engine is running, but is the car moving or standing still?

yeah thats right! but if i have it standing in neutral and rev it will occasionally make the noise, but does it all the time when driving normally.

What I'm trying to get at here is if the tapping noise is related to the wheel-tire/brake/suspension/axle or the engine.

Like Peter said, it could be any of the "whirly bits" on that side of the engine. Pull the upper TB cover and see if you can see anything. The fact that it occurs all of the time when under load could point to a worn motor mount.

If its the AC: then a bad clutch or the compressor is worn out it is a 15 year old car. Perhaps an AC specialist. It would be a shame if the compressor seized and the serpentine belt broke then things could get expensive.

And thanks of the UK it will help in the future.

another possibility is the fuel injection pump. It is on the starboard/forward corner of the engine. It's a separate "box" with 4 metal fuel-lines heading to each cylinder. You might need to remove the plastic engine cover. (don't know about boras). If it's the injection pump, you should be able to hear coming directly from the injection pump case. The injection pump has a shaft that goes into the engine, and comes out the other side, under the timing-belt cover.

If your injection pump is ticking loudly, it is toast. Unfortunately, a new one is close to $1000.

If it's your AC, that's forward, (and further down), and it's larger, and cylindrical and has a pully and belt visible on the outside.
