Does anyone know what a dealer cost for replacing a MAF sensor on a 2000 Jetta TDI, with 82,000 mi., should be?

I think they charge close to $585, depending on the dealer and what part of the country you are located. If I needed to purchase one from my local dealer I could get it for about $365. It appears as if VW is stiffing the dealers also.

If you need one, consider ordering from tdiparts, or from the For Sale section on this site. I think a standard Bosch runs about $150, and the Peirburg replacement around $80. Some purists like the Bosch, I would argue most couldn't tell the difference when using a Peirburg. The choice is yours.

YMMV

If I were in your situation, I would drive with the MAF sensor disconnected until my $80 Pierburg sensor arrived. I would NOT buy a replacement from a VW dealer.

I'd be telling them "Are you out of your F*cking Mind !?!"

There are places that you can find an acceptable replacement for less that one quarter of that cost. Look around on the board...

1stvwparts.com sells parts for 25% below list... so dealer cost is below that. I would suspect that they pay 50%-60% of list.

My local dealer sell parts for MORE than list price, but not to me.

You know, I asked my parts guy (who's got many years working in dealerships, including VW) and he says that it is pretty much SOP that the dealership pays 25% below retail (you're right, its 25% below retail, not 20). He claimed that people who claim that the dealer pays some ridiculously low amount for parts is high. His words, not mine /images/graemlins/wink.gif Any way, hopefully all the information posted was helpful.

You can also buy the 2.0 gas engine MAF at the dealer for under $100. You may need to give them the VIN of a 2.0 vehicle you find in the dealership's lot before they give it to you, though.

Spoke with my dealer today, as a matter of fact. He said around $450. Also said over $650 to replace the timing belt. I looked at the instructions on the timing belt on this site... looks kinda scary for me to do myself.

Like I pointed out 1stvwparts.com (VW dealer in WA state) sells parts @ 25% off MSRP. I know they are not doing this for good will, so the dealer cost must be less than that!

Somtimes the local dealers markup is more than 5%, even 100% on small items. The other dealer reasonably close sell parts @ MSRP.

There is not "set porfit margin" on VW parts at the dealer, like 20% or 50%, each part has a different mark up, some small parts might be marked up 100% over cost while larger more expensive stuff like a reman engine is only 25-35%, you can see the differnce in the wholesale prices too, some discounts over retail prices are quite good while other parts have a very small discount. I would think on a MAF the dealer is getting around 25% on wholesale and 40%on retail...just a rough guess based on experience working there in the past.
