Back Up Camera Dark

I have a 2014 Sportwagen with a back up camera and the thing is about useless. When you put it into reverse the screen is nice and clear for a split second and then darkens almost to black. I have messed with the brightness settings but they only seem to affect the screen for night driving.

Does anyone how to fix this? Is it a setting or hardware issue?

Well, my first thought FWIW, is that your camera is reacting to glare.
Is it shrouded well from extraneous lights, like your license plate lights?
Other than that, could it be some kind of voltage starvation?
Shots in the dark, never having had a BU camera myself.
