All I can say is "Yes to Michigan"..
I would like to offer Ann Arbor, Michigan as a possible location for TDIFest 2001. There are many reasons. First, Located 45 minutes from the car capitol of the world 'Detroit', the Big 3 are down the road. Ann Arbor is the home of the University of Michigan and more automotive engineers then you can imagine and trust me they appreciate TDI's
. Toyota, Isuzu, Hyundai have development facilities in town. Located 4 hours from Toronto, Cincinnati, and Chicago. 30 minutes south of Ann Arbor in Dundee,Michigan is the largest Cabela's Sporting Good store in the country (any hunters?) and the future home of Six Flags Michigan. We have a drag strip (Milan speedway) 15 minutes south of town and the Michigan International Speedway is 45 minutes to the West. Also, Automobile and Car and Drive magazines call Ann Arbor home, and Who Knows? TDIfest might provoke a story in one of their magazines, weirder things have happened.
Ann Arbor would be a great location and it is my home (I have to sell a little bit) but honestly there are lots a great things to be offered here for this kind of event. It's not Las Vegas (Did I mention the casino's in Detroit and Windsor), but it would be an automotive experience.

That is an excellent idea!

Where better to tout the virtues of TDI than Motown? I think all the automotive engineering activity there could give us a real dynamic media/political springboard to promote TDI in the eyes of the public and the industry. This could be big. Very big.

We could even offer it (humbly) as an oppurtunity for Detroit to showcase some of their "CIDI" technology. I for one, would love to get a look at the turbodiesel hybrids the Big Three have been quietly developing like the Dodge ESX and the Ford Prodigy and GM Precept

This could really give TDI and diesel-hybrid technology a push in the right direction and help dispel some myths. By locating the event in Detroit-- it could move beyond just Volkswagen TDI and encompass the future of diesel automobiles!

Well.., as a devoted BUCKEYE it is hard for me to come up with any reason to go to Ann Arbor however.., the 2001 TDI fest would cause me to "cross over", as it were. Seriously, a pretty good idea - CENTRAL LOCATION!!!! Count me in.

None at this time
Michigan could do it up right, and you have
many of us out there and close by from the
GTG in Lansing for the timing belt, so you would have a large help out pool of TDIers
so you would have the support you would need.
Count me in if you get the nod from the group.

Hi,

quote:
Originally posted by Stealth TDI in another thread regarding MI:
Since so many of us piss and moan about VW's poor service and VWoA's underhandedness, I think it would be hypocritical to get involved with VW Headquarters... sleeping with the enemy. Our events are bound to get positive attention for whoever sponsors it. A worthy VW dealer is one thing, but VWoA?
Having our GTG anywhere near them is going to give them a big head, even if they have nothing to do with us.

In addition to this, I'll add that this location really blows for the West Coasters. To use the extreme as an example: Someone from the SFBA would've traveled 3002 miles to attend the 2000 TDI Fest (I believe one person did). That same person would have to travel 2374 miles to Ann Arbor, a savings of a whopping 628-miles! Why does the largest (by far) contingent of TDI Forum members have to make the largest sacrifice two years in a row to attend? Or just not attend?

I'm not saying we should have the TDI Fest in the SFBA, Phoenix, SLC, or in any other specific backyard of the region that is clearly dominating the voting booth right now. All I'm asking is that we choose a more-reasonable location that'll allow the most Forum members to participate in the TDI Fest over the long run... the next five years. Living in the middle of nowhere, I realise that I'll have to travel to any VW gathering; but I'd like the TDI Fest to be within my reach at least every now and then. As I stated in another thread, how about:

2000 - East Coast
2001 - West Coast
2003 - Somewhere in the middle

This doesn't seem like a bad rotation to keep. Of course, I realise that a shortage of coordinators will have a significant impact on the location of the TDI Fest. If we Westerners wanna moan about having the TDI Fest here but no one wants to coordinate it, then screw us! But that doesn't seem to be the case right now.

Just thought I'd chime in...

I agree with what you are saying concerning location issues and peoples ability to attend these functions. I offered Ann Arbor for what it has to offer(Location, Technology, Services). I will follow the will of the forum and if it is not to far away I will be attending. I had to miss this years because we have a 5 month old baby.....

where ever it is, NO HOLIDAY WEEKEND!!!!Lets do a poll and see how many want to attend and where they are from, this should give us an idea where to have it.It can't be fair to everyone, but should be to the majority of members. This can be worked out. I'm sorry I missed it!!
