There's gotta be some late 80s/early 90s we could get on CL.

Or maybe an old benz, people are selling those like crazy right now.

Best I could find. Almost too nice actually.

No way we could get a benz, they're way too popular around here.

Some old beat up Camrys and the like look promising. Something with a salvage title or has been in a minor accident would be ideal.

But I really want this to be a diesel VW! Anyway, I'm serious about this. Application need to be in by January.

You want cheap and sorta reliable but mostly dirt cheap... look for a 2nd generation (91-96) ford escort with a manual transmission. :D
We picked ours up, fully running... clean title... for $700

I race in the Chump Car circuit. It's a blast... we actually raced at Atlanta Motor Speedway and Daytona this year. Watkins Glen is on the calendar for next year...

Chump Car is similar to Lemons, but we think it's better...

GB, that Fiesta is great! I love the radiator and K&N cone filter. How did they do with it?

Here's the thing about Lemons: you don't need to be fast. Also, you're more likely to win an award and prize money by having the most heroic fix, or showing up with a completely hopeless car and doing surprisingly well with it.

Neons are played out. The judges absolutely DESPISE E30 BMWs and Miatas, those are the two obvious choices which means you're just trying too hard to win. Instead, don't try to win at all. Show up with something completely hopeless and/or unique (TDI-powered Ford Pinto was an idea biochoppers tossed to me once when we were discussing the possibility of a SoCal TDI Lemons effort). You will win the admiration of the judges that way because you're showing them that you GET what Lemons is about. You will sail through BS inspection and have way more fun--not to mention far more likely to win an award which PAYS the same amount of $ (usually in nickels :p) as winning does.

I've known of Lemons since about 2006. I attended two events in the Mid West in 2007 and 8. I was a co-owner/driver of a car that competed in several races (I only ran two events myself) in Michigan. The two I ran in were at Nelson Ledges in Ohio (a true 24 hour event in 2009! Only race they ran at that track...) and the 2010 "American Irony" event at Gingerman Raceway in South Haven, MI. We ran a 1984 Scirocco... with an ABA installed in it (yay VW lego cars!).

The first event we ran, one of the BS judges just laughed and said "Oh, it's a Scirocco! It won't even last 2 hours!" And that was the end of that. Sadly, he turned out to be mostly right. lol!

The car DID put up competitive laps, despite having only 115 hp. It also weighed less than 1900 lbs by the time we were done with it... Mk3 instrument cluster zip tied to part of the roll cage in front of the driver!

It was aided by a trick wheel alignment by yours truly and having a decent group of drivers.

The real trick? Put in the largest fuel cell you legally can and just keep driving. You don't have to be fast, you just have to put down all the laps you can, drive CLEANLY (way more important than you'd think) and minimize how many stops you have to do. THAT is the ticket to winning. I've seen many a Japanese car blow head gaskets from Lemons torture. VWs have their issues, but the iron block 4 cylinder engines are very stout.

Stick with something you can repair and already have a good group of friends who may have spare parts...

Got a car - it's an already-set-up Volvo 240 wagon. Slow, but good brakes and suspension, and the cage is already done. So not much building and fixing to do, which is nice for a first time team.

Pierre, you want in? We *probably* need one more person, and someone with racing and wrenching experience is highly desired.

Yeah Matt!

I should also note, someone with extra racing/safety gear to share with the team (helmets, NecksGen, gloves, suits, boots, gas jugs, etc.) is highly desired, as we have NOTHING.

Also WTB: racing seat.

Count me in.. I do have some track experience and pretty low on the wrenching experience... particularly on Volvos but certainly willing to jump in.. do have the racing gear... no seat though but ... PM me your phone number would love to talk about it some more... Too bad it's not an ALH MKIV ... I do have a $hit load of racing parts for those .. suspension .. rods.. pistons... block.. etc etc...

I don't have any extras, but I have most everything that meets lemons spec for myself (though I think I need the fire-resistant socks to add to the collection. They didn't require those in 2010..).

Helmet, suit, gloves, shoes....

I just might be the guy to join this effort. I bought some seats for my Jetta from two guys building a Gen 3 Jetta gasser out in Atwater. I had never heard of LeMons so I came home and did a bit of research. I thought cool, that looks fun.

My skills are your basic backyard skills. I can wrench a bit, drive a bit, etc. Am I fast, not as fast as some, but I can hold my own. Am I a mechanic, not by any means. However, I can fix just about anything I really want to fix.

Anyway, my limitations are time and scheduling. Everything I do must be around my children's schedule. Although, they might actually enjoy going to the race track.

I think I have my children. That means I would have to bring them along where ever I go.

Also, I think the car needs Fred's Club sticker or logo.

We're going to completely re-theme it. Might do one of my ideas... The E-Lemon-Ator! Paint it like this and dress up like the ZZ Top guys.

And yeah, definitely will have some TDIclub stickers on it!

Gonna have to nail some shoes to the ground for that one...

So, if my children are with me, that means my mother and my sweetie will probably come too. That means we have a few fans, possibly even a little help in the pits. I simply have to be in Dixon CA at 6 PM on Friday and again on Sunday. No wiggle room there.

I have a one ton van chock full of tools, AC power, electric impact wrench, floor jack, etc. Let's do this guys, we can make this happen.

Here's our car!

And, instead of waiting until March 2014...we could try for December 7-8th? Matt, Pierre, Tom, what do you think?

I am all in. I will bring all of the support I can offer to the table. I was already contemplating how to do this before I discovered this thread. Let's do this guys, let's make it happen!
