Climatronic issues while reversing

I've noticed that now when I reverse the car, the Climatronic HVAC doesn't switch to internal recycling of the cabin air. Initially noticed it when I smelled the scent of DEF while reversing on a rather chilly day (-35C).

Even in warmer temperatures it doesn't seem to be functioning.

Using the switch manually works just fine.

Any idea what it could be? There have been no codes thrown either, however, I don't have access to VCDS and only have a ScanGuage 2.

I'm not sure I ever noticed my 2012 doing this (SE trim with climatronic). Was this a feature for the SEL (highly optioned) models only?

Some of the cars will turn on recirc when shifting into R. I'd guess that it's not doing it because it's so cold outside.
