Traction Control (ASR) Light with Shudder

Over the past few days at some point on almost every journey I make the ASR light comes on and after it does it feels like the car has a light shudder like an unbalanced wheel. I think it is coming from the back and is gone next time I start the car.

Until I can get the fault code read out are there any common faults with these or is it likely to be a dodgy sensor?

Almost every year around October-November I'll get the ASR and ABS lights coming on together but there is no noticable affect when driving. I always mean to look into it when the weather gets warmer but then it doesnt happen for another year! This is the first time that the ASR light has come on by itself (other than when the wheels lose traction).

ASR does nothing in the back end of the car, unless you have AWD perhaps. ASR itself only reduces torque by cutting throttle input.

Now if both lights are coming on, I'd get it scanned.

ok thanks, I could be wrong about where it is coming from. I definitely feel a shudder of sorts then look down and sure enough the light is on. I haven't seen both on together for a long time.

Not to my knowledge? How would I know if it was fitted? Is there something visible under the bonnet?

I'll try to get it scanned a friend used to have vagcom. I'll update the thread with any fault codes, thanks :)

Here are the results of the scan relative to the ABS:

Address 03: ABS Brakes
Controller: 1C0 907 379 D
Component: ASR FRONT MK60 0103
Coding: 0021505
Shop #: WSC 00028
2 Faults Found:
00285 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor: Front Right (G45)
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit - Intermittent
01314 - Engine Control Module
013 - Check DTC Memory - Intermittent

We've had a lot of snow recently and I think it could be something clogging the ring that the speed sensor uses? Is there a way to check the sensor itself? I've borrowed a laptop with vagcom but have no instructions. I remember when I used it before to check a problem there was a measuring block to check. Is there something similar for ABS?

Normally I would take the wheel off for a look but it is currently -9C and I dont have access to a garage. My main concern is that when the light comes on there is a noticeable judder, not terrible but I can definitely feel it. Just worried about what is causing it.

Worth noting that sometimes I get both ASR and ABS lights but more often just the ASR light. On occasion I get neither but that has become very rare.

Could be snow or slush. If you go into measuring blocks while in the ABS controller you can see the wheel sensor's data. You can see it's inverse for some reason too.

But, that error would cause your light to come on.

ok I will give that a try. I assume I'll need to set it to log and then drive the car?

Thinking about it I have only been doing short journeys around the town recently and often dont get above 40mph. Could it be that the light only comes on (and stays on) when I get to a certain speed? Just thinking if there was something clogged in it then the light would come on as soon as I drive off?

From memory the ABS sensor is at the back of the hub infront of the track rod end? I could maybe try giving everything a blast with a power washer to clear anything out until I get the opportunity to get the wheel off and have a good look.

I checked the wiring in the wheel arch, the ABS ring and replaced the ABS sensor as it was only £9. No change. I'll log the data tomorrow. Any idea what could be causing the light to come on?

EDIT:

Just cleared all the fault codes and took the car for a run while logging the wheel speed sensors. The ASR light came on and now only this code is stored in the ABS module -

01314 - Engine Control Module
013 - Check DTC Memory - Intermittent

I checked the engine control module and this code is stored -

17669 - Pump-jet Valve: Cylinder 1 (N240): Regulation Range Exceeded
P1261 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

This code was stored last time I checked codes but I assumed it was from the recent problems I had with the head and I didnt clear it. This time I cleared it and it came back. A little worrying because it was cylinder number one that had the damaged valve. After doing some reading the code in the ABS is logged when it thinks there is an engine fault code (which there is). So it looks like there is no fault code logged when the ASR light is coming on?

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm stuck on what to do next!

I'd deal with the engine issue first- I've seen traction control disabled by outstanding engine codes before...

ok I'll look into that next although I suspect it is going to be another head scratcher!

17669/P1261/004705 - PD Unit Injector: Cylinder 1 (N240): Regulation Range Exceeded

Possible Symptoms

  • Drivability Issues
  • Reduced Power
  • Rough Engine Running
  • Increased Emission Values
Possible Causes

  • Regulation times exceeded
  • Contact resistance
Possible Solutions

  • Check Injectors and Injector Wiring
    • See Meas. Value Block 018
    • Check Resistance of Injectors/Wiring
I dont have any of the symptoms and before I pulled the head a VW specialist checked all the injector related wiring and found no fault. I'll check measuring block 018 tomorrow and report back.

ok I logged measuring block 018 and when the ASR light comes on the value of injector 1 goes to 47 and stays there until I stop and restart the car.

Here is the log file - http://www.weekendwasted.co.uk/LOG-01-018-ENG-Jan11.csv (see line 459)

Should I maybe start a different thread as it now looks to be an engine fault as DPM suspected.
