A/C just stopped working

This car is beginning to scare me. I won't go into a list. Anyway, the A/C was working fine, now the compressor doesn't engage. With out warning the thing just stopped working. I was under the hood trying to fix the fuel shutoff solenoid but I don't think I bumped anything. The fuses check out fine. The belts are all there. The light on the A/C button works. I don't know what's up.

Is there a relay that goes out often on these things?

Can someone shed some light on this one for me. Thanks. What would I do without this Forum?

Probably the system is low on refrigerant due to a leak, and the pressure has dropped low enough to go below the low-pressure cutoff switch setting.

Take it to an A/C specialist shop. Most normal backyard mechanics do not have the tools to leak-test the system and then properly evacuate and re-charge it. In Canada, home servicing of A/C systems is illegal.

Could also be electrical. Check fuses and wiring. I had a wire break off at one of the connectors from the A/C clutch.

My 2001 had the same issue. Radiator fans would not run. AC compressor did not engage. AC light comes on when AC selected. Found that a wire under the battery connected to the fan control module had chafed through against a plastic mount. Corrosive enviroment under the battey ate through copper. Tough to see and find. I was in the process of removing the fan module when I saw some green powder. That was it. Spliced the wire and wrapped in heavy electrical tape. Back to normal.

Thanks for the leads guys. I'll be checking into it and let you know what I find. The air was pretty cold before the failure, but not ice cold, there may be a small leak. Anyway, I'll let you know what I find so that future problems can be solved.

I feel your pain, just ordered a compressor and dryer to redo my system. Mechanic called and said "you know how to do this, we cleaned it out, order the parts and put them in then bring it back". Otherwise please pay us $1100!

Pull the connector to the compressor clutch and test for signal there. I had the cc fuse go out (20A) recently, despite it looking like it was OK. HTH
