I'm looking at an 04 B5 with 150K for about $3k. Problem is it has something wrong with the trans. I'm not a trans guy but can change parts.

Dealers says it has a torque converter code, a shift 1 code and shift 3 code. He's offered me to scan the car and get the code numbers, but it's an hour away.

He says it's almost always a Torque Converter.

What say you smart people? Could it just be the TC? I read that it's $3000 for rebuilt trans from VW and to not trust used ones...if you can find them.

The rest of the car is very nice and if I can get it for under $4000, I'm pretty interested.

Question is, what is your threshold for what you want to have in it? Assume you will need a transmission or manual conversion and if no documentation stating otherwise a geared or deleted balance shaft module. So after you buy it $5000 investment give or take. Of course afterwards, you would have a nice reliable car.
