When I did the 02J shifter swap, I just bolted it down, without sealant. Hasn’t leaked, yet.

Maybe if I’m sideways or upside down it would, but then I’d have bigger issues.

I didn’t see any traces of sealant when I pulled mine out. If your transmission is in a position where it can leak from the top, you have other problems.
