Just finished this over the weekend, followed the instructions over at http://www.myturbodiesel.com/wiki/cbea-cjaa-vw-jetta-golf-jsw-tdi-timing-belt-removal-part-1/

Bought the rebuild kit from kermatdi and rented to the tools from the link above as well. it was pretty painless, i took my time and didnt rush anything, i had no need for a vehicle the whole weekend so i stretched it out over friday evening til sunday morning.

Does anyone know the going rate for this being done at the dealership? parts and labor?

I paid $700, parts and labor about 2 years ago.. that was on a 2006 Jetta.. Looking at the A3 engine bay I don't see it being anymore difficult.

Good job on getting it done yourself.

I have seen some dealer charge $1200 for that service. I'm at 90K and it seems to be racking up faster as time goes on....120k will be here before i know it, Good job.

call a local dealer for a quote.

big city prices run up to $1300 and up.

the newest models run 130k for a timing belt change.
