Noticed this not sure how long it's been going on. Car is a 2011 Golf and was in storage for 4 months. Just started driving it again and even when it's cold after starting both engine fans are always running. AC not turned on, DPF delete so definitely not doing a regen. :D. Any ideas maybe a stuck relay?

You have a bad egt sensor reporting open circuit . Look in measuring blocks field 99 to see which is at max 930 deg c. There are 4x egt sensors. You can trade connector with a good neighboring sensor to fix. Might need a knife to cut key in connectors to swap.

Thanks for the response. The car had the “fix” by VW before the tune/delete. Do you think it’s with the ECU tune itself or just a bad sensor?

I am done here, take it to your tuner.

Jeff, I recently had the same experience with a 2008 VW EOS 2.0 gasser engine.

Long story short, on those vehicles the Fan Control Module (FCM) and maybe the ECU, get the cue to turn on the fans from two different Coolant Temperature Sensors (CTS). On that engine, one CTS is located at/near the end of the head on the transmission side and the other one is located on the front (toward front of car) side of the engine near the oil dip stick on a smaller return coolant hose.

The issue was the electrical connector to the CTS on the end of the head wasn't pushed in deep enough to make contact...... problem solved.

And, for what it is worth, the FCM is built into or part of the fan motor on one of the fans at the radiator.

Edit: is in red (sorry about that)

I tune many (and own 2.0TFSI) and also familiar with the gas car temp sensors failing and running fans running on. I see failed egt sensors running fans continuously every day on tdi CR's, bmw's, and mb's. The fault codes will usually tell you where it hurts unless car has been tuned and fault classes are zero'd out and off. The sensors are usually still plugged in and ecu is shaking-hands on key-on, and listening. Pop in another oem ecu (and key on) and you will see the faults. The op should be talking to his tuner with this problem anyway.
