What year is your TDI?
If 2004 Golf, the cupholder in back is different than pics.
To remove it you need to release clips on sides of cupholder. I used two thin pieces of plastic (thinner than a credit card) inserted against the outside sides of the slide. Then pull back on cupholder and it should come out. You then pull (or pry) up on the front edge of the cupholder cover and it will come off and expose the two retaining screws.
Everything else is the same as the article. It took me 1/2 hour to figure out the cupholder and 1/2 hour to install a used armrest.
