Sounds like the water pump is bad to me. I would definitely try and spin the impeller.

I was thinking the impeller also as was mentioned a few times above but never responded to.

I wouldn't worry about the coolant IF the system was flushed to remove the original stuff. I can't believe there's a coolant made that isn't good for aluminum/iron systems.

It’s nearly impossible to diagnose your problem in a forum. Assuming the cooling system/heat was working properly before you took it in for the timing belt replacement???? Take the car back to them and tell them it worked fine before they worked on it and you want it fixed properly. If they balk, just call credit card company and cancel their payment. Take car to reputable VW TDI shop.
