Default Used TDI: TB broke - new head

An honest TDI seller has informed me that his timimg belt broke and he had the engine rebuilt with a new cylinder head at a non-dealer shop.

Is it worth a chance to buy such a vehicle? Can I get a million km out of it?

Bill

It depends on what kind of a deal you are getting. My guess is that if the seller neglected the maintenance so as not to not replace the TB, what else has he neglected? Oil change intervals, correct oil type (synthetic), good fuel.

It could also have been a defective TB and not his fault at all. These are just a few issues that I would consider.

If the head was replaced, there should be at least a 10k/6 month warranty from the shop that did the work. My guess is if it makes it that long, there will be no major issues relating to the TB down the road.

If some of the history can be verified and the price is right, go for it, these are very tough engines.

Don't automatically assume it was poor maintenance that caused a TB failure. I can personally vouch that that is not always the case. (My second timing belt lasted 15K )

Ask what kind of mileage the car is getting, and ask about oil consumption. If you really want to go deeper, get a compression check. (Should not cost more than a half hour labor)

If it uses little or no oil, and has good economy I wouldn't hesitate to buy it at all.
