Are there any lights on in the dash?

Have you checked the intake piping to check for any leaks?

Black smoke is symptomatic of an abnormally high Fuel-to-Air ratio. You could have camshaft issues but you could also have blown open one of your intercooler hoses. The quickest thing to inspect is the hoses. Pop the hood, drop the splashguard and inspect all your 3" hoses for connection and tears/holes. If you don't find any problem, you're likely needing a new camshaft.

Oil pumps don't slowly fail. Has the low oil pressure light ever came on while the emgine was running?

You need to find a TDI guru and get the car to him for a second opinion.

Heed Deming's advice. Most mechanics have nary a clue about these cars. Sometimes what sounds expensive may not be. I myself am wondering if a boost hose has dislodged or has a hole in it.

TomF,

Are you in New Hampshire or Ontario ?

You need to find an experienced TDI Tech or TDI Club member to look
at your car.

We can guide you to someone, but we need to know where you live.

You have an aftermarket warranty on the car?

probably the dollar amount is limited to the value of the car. They won't pay more than book value of the car for a repair.

The fair market value of an '05 Passat TDI is a lot more than $3200. Insurance is normaly for a fair market value and not some "book value". However, insurance companies always offer a very low price at first. That's why never take the first offer..... Negotiate with them, even if it's for a replacement warranty of an engine. They need to bring up the value of the car to what they are selling for on the market. And that would be somewhere around $5000. Only cars that come with safety and etest can be considered when looking for fair market value but the insurance companies like to include everything that is on Kijiji and Auto Trader. This includes all the as-is cars too and that bring the market value down and that's what they want. Fight them, don't give in.

most likely they use a percentage of book value they cannot exceed because supplemental costs may be added to repair bill. This may be a good example of why not to buy aftermarket warranties.
