Yes.. they are diesel oils. If it's 5w40 it's diesel. Not diesel-only, but a diesel oil.

Lemme put it this way. There is no "regular" Mobil 1 5w40. Mobil's 5w40 oils here in the US are diesel oils. Same with any other oil. Shell. Vavoline. Amsoil. Castrol. Heck, look the CJ-4 link in my sig.

How many miles does your friend's VW Passat 2.0 TDI-PD have now? Did he ever take a picture under the valve cover?

....150 000, running on Rotella T, no time for pictures, belt, water pump, pulley - replaced on 100k. Oil change done every 5000 miles.

Is he aware the oil is *probably* completely suitable for continued use at 5,000 miles? Or has he done used oil analysis trending and determined the oil is used up at 5,000 miles?

....He is getting the Rotella almost free, in big barrels for his shop.... Yes the oil is probably completely usable for 10 000 miles, but Who cares :):):).

Opportunity cost.

Oil and filter every 5K miles would annoy me. Maybe I'm spoiled with 10K mile intervals (even though my oil is fine for continued use at 10K miles).

8 years later.....

Sold out the diesel beetle 1.9 PD. Got new Rabbit 2009 gasoline 2.5L, 120 000 miles later running on 5W40 Dello 400 LE, drives excellent. Even the spark plugs lasted 120 000 miles, before start misfiring.

The diesel beetle was running fine, but I sold out because very small room in the back seat.

That 2.5 is what we in America call a "boat anchor"... wish you well with it but it is not particularly fuel efficient IIRC.
Curious as to why you didn't find one with a 2.0 and purchase it. Was it because of it being more expensive?
