Loud howling noise at 60MPH

Sounds like your differential. There was a TSB about low gear oil causing noise a couple years ago. Although I believe it was usually a low speed and while turning.

Do you have a roof rack or other add-on device attached to the car?
Had a Jetta here with just such an item (factory roof rack) that would howl at speed. The front cross bar would resonate in the air current.

I had this at all speeds. It turned out to be the Left half shaft. The axles should not have any radial play in them. They can move axially, but if they can be wiggled in the direction perpendicular to the shaft, then that may be the problem. I would vote for a bad axle shaft.
