I'm stoked that TDIFest is finally coming to me! When it was in Grand Rapids I lived 20 minutes away, but didn't own a TDI yet. Now I live in Rockville, and I'm SO THERE!

And by the way, I worked as a trauma resident at Washington Hospital Center. The Dulles area may be bad, but there are much worse parts of DC. Go, have fun, and you'll be fine. One cop friend of mine said he's never filled out a stolen vehicle report on a VW. There are just other cars people here prefer.

You are joking, right? I'm assuming that you really do live in South Florida as you say? The TDI Fest will be held 25 miles outside the District of Columbia [or so I am told] which in itself [D C] is arguably somewhat safer that your stomping grounds. The area around Dulls Flying Field in the rolling hills of Virginia's Fairfax County, though the traffic is normally heavy, is a relatively safe area.
I have lived in Fairfax County (Dulles is well within Fairfax Co.) since 1969 and I have NEVER witnessed, nor been a victim of, violent crime. It does not happen here with any frequency.

Count me in for the festivities!

Awesome Nate! We look forward to seeing you! Stay tuned for more info... we're trying to compile a bunch of things before we start leaking details about pricing and whatnot.

Fairfax Co. is one of the wealthest counties in the nation crime is really not an issue. I wish we could get over the crime thing here as it is not as much of an issue as others have made out. Truely the idea that something is going to happen to you here that would not happen at your own home is crazy. Lets move on to help with suggests to make this the best TDIfest to date.

You are absolutely correct. I lived in Northern Virginia [Fairfax, Springfield and Alexandria for 28+ years and concur with your statement. I am afraid the location of the Fest having been originally characterized as in D C may have been the root cause of the bad rap that has been cast [by some] on Fairfax County. There is no reason for a participant in the Fest to ever go into the District unless he/she wants to and even then, most of the city is relatively safe, especially in the day time. Much of the serious crime in D C takes place within the confines of the U S Capitol and is perpetrated by our elected employees against taxpayers.

So with that said, how about a cruise. I am a real estate appraiser in the Washington Area and can take folks for a for a tour around DC, in DC or surrounding areas. I know it has been emailed about Great Falls or Skyline Drive. I know some roads that have alot of twists and turns or scenic. I think that if your coming from somewhere else that you might want some city time. I am just putting this out there to let everyone know that I am able to help. Just looking to make this the best TDIfest to date.

Consider "historical" routes from that go viaHarpers Ferry (WV) to Gettyburg (PA) via Emmitsburg, MD; some fine mid-Atlantic scenery and ecellent Maryland country roads:)

Be very careful driving in the socialist republic of Virginia. The revenue collectors enforce speed laws rigorously. Virginia and the District of Columbia have outlawed radar detectors and look for them.

This is true .... no no to the radar detectors here but if you dont drive atleast 70 be prepred to get run over.

How about a drive up the toll road around 495 nd over the wilson bridge to 295 up to 50 or RFK then back into the center of town thru 395 and up pass the monuments onward north on up rock creek parkway then down mass ave viewing parts of national cathedral of national landmarks also all coming to an end in DC back over the memorial bridge to view arlington cemetery and back down route 50 into Arlington and crossing back onto I-66 and connecting to the toll road for a nice ride home to the hotel. This ride can take all day (pending on the stops, you kno what do you want to see or photo opts, like alot of TDI's infront of the Lincoln Memorial) or it can go real quick.

Just another idea.

You're talking about an all-day trip right there. I think that we need to do some sort of a group drive, or perhaps a scavenger hunt type drive that will encompass 3 or 4 hours, possibly to include a nice place for lunch. Keep in mind that we will have lots of activities planned, so we don't want to lose an entire day to driving.

If people want to sight see, that's fine. I would recommend that those who want to see a lot of the local attractions plan to either arrive a day early, or stay a day late. The hotel is willing to accomodate early and late departures at the same rate as the rest of the fest weekend.

Group travel should be anticipated as taking 25% longer than solo travel. A 2 hour trip will take 2 1/2, (and no, it's NOT because I'm driving slower). Provide maps or directions to a destination and let the participants travel en-mass, but solo, to save time.

That is a very good point!

Finally a TDI Fest I can attend. Can't wait for the details. Count me in.
BTW, I'll have an '03 Jetta that will be ready for a timing belt if one is needed for a demo.

I am moving out to the area in April for a job transfer, and hope to live in Ashburn. Once I get settled, I will PM the POCs and see if I can offer any help. This will be my first event and the wife already knows we are going.

CMB430:

Great news! I hope your move to the area goes well. Ashburn is a nice place to live, although traffic to and from the city can be a pain in the neck. Hopefully you have a job that's close to your home so you don't have to commute back and forth.

Let me know when you're around. For the time being, we have enough support on the planning stages. We will need people to help at the actual event (registration, check-in, scoring for some of the events, etc.).

Drop me a line when you get a chance.

This means you need to become a Redskin fan. I hope to see Redskin flags on your car at the fest.

We still call them that. ;)

Also, didn't mean to click the edit button on your post... I'm still getting used to this moderator thing... accidentally clicked edit instead of quote.

Sorry guys but I am not a sports fan. I prefer things like turning wrenches, shooting, modeling or working out for fun as opposed to watching a bunch of guys who supposedly graduated from college hit each other and chase after a ball.

I will shoot a PM when I move to the area. My wife and I should be able to help out, so long as we can enjoy it too! Am I able to bring my Black Lab?

Damn, hit the edit button again. -VeeDubTDI

I'm with you on the sports thing. The only sports I'm interested in are Motorsports (and not NASCAR).

Unfortunately, the hotel is not pet friendly. I'm sure it's a bit of an inconvenience for some people, but I wouldn't allow pets either if I just spent several million dollars on a complete renovation.

Okay, no problem. I thought this was outside in the sunshine, not in a hotel. Remember I will be living within 40 min of the Fest, so I will sleep at home.

Oh, well if that's the case, then you are more than welcome to bring your dog. A significant portion of the activities will be outside. Just leave the dog at home if you plan on attending the awards banquet and auction on Sunday evening. That will be in the hotel's ballroom and is approximately 3 hours.
