just bought my 2006 Jetta TDi manual with 91K miles

Timing belt is original as well as everything associated with it.

Already going to get this done but have about a 70 mile trip to get it to the local guru tomorrow to do a lot of work

Do I tow it to the shop or risk driving it.

From what I have heard, its about 11K miles overdue..

Is it a ticking time bomb?

Its spent its entire life gently driven and in nice weather San Jose CA

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks
Peter

It's also really overdue from an age perspective... common rule of thumb is 5 years for a timing belt kit, or the mileage, whichever comes first.

Just one more consideration... your car your rules. If the timing belt pathway is making any noise at all... or the belt looks like it's degenerated at all...tow charge way cheaper than a new head. :)

I've known a lot of people who went way over on the change (I NEVER recommend that!) And I only personally know a couple people who had one break. We bought a 2006 Jetta which had just had it's first timing belt change at just over 200k miles. It comes down to what you are comfortable with. If you're feeling unsure, get a tow truck.
