Battery Life Testing with Solar Analyzer WalMart EverStart

When do you replace your battery? (See below)

Well my 615CAA H6 sized Walmart EverStart gave me great service for 40
months. It was still working, but after two days of sitting, volts seemed to
drop off fast to 12.07 volts (50% charge) and the CCA test showed 420 CCA...
Of course there are parasitic drainage in the car, but cold day start after sitting
two days, it was slow to crank. It's working, as long as I run it everyday. 12.00
volt is about the min you want for your battery to start.

Bought another EverStart, but this one is the 730CCA model. Hard to beat $117.
They have some pro-rated life based on free at 3 years, prorated to 5 years. I
have to bring old one back. I should get a few bucks pro-rate. At least I get my $12
core charge back.

Fully charged indoors at room temp, volts are good, but next test fail.

CAA TEST showing 420 CAA (battery 615 rating) and FAIL LIGHT.
This confirms the weak starts and loss of voltage over two days.

People ask when to replace a battery? Well you can wait until it leaves you
stranded or monitor it (like a potable Solar internal capacitance tester) and
observe performance.

This tester also does a START test which measures the MIN volts instantaneously
during start. I think 9-9.5 volts is min draw down. It will also check charging system.
This is an inexpensive tester so it's not going to be as accurate and comprehensive
as a professional bench model, but it is a metric to judge

My battery was clearly on the down side of it's life, from weak starting after two days
sit, and using a volt meter to check volt drop. So "SOLAR" helped me determine it was
time, along with age. SOLAR is one brand, shop around. These are fairly cheap, under
$50.

Why I replaced it:
Low Volts after sitting 2 days.
Sluggish Starting after sitting 2 days.
SOLAR CCA Test & fail light.
New Battery $117, Worth It Not To Worry.

thanks for the post.

I have been watching my dealer parts desk battery for three years.
(checking with a solar tester) (original battery went five years for me)

will put some figures up one of these days.

I took this info using the same tester Solar BA7

top is replacement battery,

and the bottom few readings are from the original battery just before it quit
(failed to start the car on 9/15/13) and was immediately replaced with one from the dealer parts desk

I checked and decided to put a bit of distilled water in the cells earlier this month, seemed a bit low, so I topped off to the bottom of the indicator inside battery. (labels peeled off to reveal screw-out caps on each cell)

Think I will charge up the jump starter and take it on any extended drives.

Excellent data collection.

Well I am a happy with my new Everstart Maxx battery 5 year warranty,
3 free replacement, and pro-rate after, $117. However I started thinking
about returning my old one for core and "pro rate". I Googled it, found
some complaints of Walmart not honoring warranty returns or pro-rate.
You never know the people may be just wrong.

I also came across a toll free "Hot Line" for Everstart batteries.
Everstart Hotline 1-888-387-8278. They explained their policy,
adding if you have a problem, call them. I was concerned I only
had my credit card statement not original receipt. OK proof of
purchase is credit card statement. However it is a moot point.
I also found I bought the lower priced PLUS model 40 months
ago. That has a 2 year free replace warranty, period, not the
5 year warranty of the MAXX. Oh well, only paid $89.

Battery manufactures & retailers play w/ warranty & price. They hope:

- You lose receipt
- You forget it's in warranty
- Battery gets to the end of warranty
- Need battery, replace w/ another brand, trading old one in for core
- You sell car and new owner does not know or is eligible for warranty

The current average owners keep cars is now 11.4 years, which is way
up from past averages. So they might buy a one or two batteries?
Some batteries are identical inside except for label and a longer
warranty and associated higher price.

I should have been more consistent recording the temperature.

over the last couple days, I ran a couple more checks, and think a lot of the variation I see is based on temp differences. (day before Thanksgiving and today)

for temps (IR temp read on battery post)
of 30, 43, 63, and 75, (degrees f)

I see CA of
962, 985, 1013, 1073

and cranking voltage of

8.41, 8.79, 8.62, 8.91

based on what I saw with the original battery, the CA and CCA and cranking voltage drop way off as the battery finally dies.
