I would love to, but the goal is mileage, reasonable space, and utility.
I've tried a neighbor's 2011 Jetta Sportwagen. Such a sweet ride! But it's very tight for someone my size. Literally, I'd say an Ace Bandage may be a looser fit.

Apparently, Passat TDI wagons are akin to unicorns. Nobody has one within 200 miles. But the Passat is a size up, which means my knees don't touch the dash. I'm willing to drive for one, if it's reasonable and reliable.

But is an 02-05 Golf TDI any roomier than a Jetta? If I understand the chatter on here correctly, it's more reliable than a Passat, and available with a stick. Both are bonus for me.

Default 2002 VW Golf GLS TDI For Sale in Honolulu, HI

2002 VW Golf GLS TDI diesel hatchback with 96,000 miles.
Save money with a fuel-efficient car that runs on regular diesel, or biodiesel.
The car is exceptionally clean and well-maintained. I just had it professionally detailed.
Monsoon Premium Audio sound system
Michelin Pilot Exalto tires
A clean title
Registration and safety are good through May 2017
I am the second owner, meticulously maintaining the car for 7 years with all service records. Some recent repairs that help to make this car a tremendous value:
new timing belt - 2015
new starter - 2013
new EGR valve - 2016
new headliner - 2015
I always used fully synthetic oil (Rotella) for regular oil changes. I also changed the fuel filter frequently.
I intended to keep the car indefinitely because of the TDI reputation for longevity. But when the AC went out recently, I opted to get a larger car for transporting the family instead.
Let my diligence with the maintenance of this sporty hatchback be your gain.
Price is $3500, which is $1400 below Blue Book. That was the amount of a verbal estimate for the AC repair (evaporator).

Not my Thread I just inserted timely comments.....I dont keep my Cars for that long but I read a lot and have had nearly one of each type of TDI
The 2012-2014 Passat TDI has the Gen 2 2.0 common rail engine and an SCR system already installed and will be an easier Car to emission fix.....the 2009-2014 Jetta, Golf, New Beetle has the Gen 1 Common rail motor and will be the hardest if not impossible Emission fix.....if you are to buy a Jetta, Passat, Golf or New Beetle ! I would buy a 2015 with the Generation 3 2.0 LTR diesel with a EA288 motor if you can find one...has SCR and latest updates....

You certainly have seen this already, but VW announced they will no longer sell diesels in the US. Your concern is a reality. I wonder if the other diesel sedan makers, in particular Chevrolet who makes a diesel Cruze, are going to see the demand for turbo diesel commuter cars, and perhaps try to fill a part of the vacuum left by the departure of VW TDIs from the US market.

Things that the TDI covered, but the Cruze doesn't yet:
  • independent rear suspension
  • back seat leg room
  • manual transmission
  • not gutless
  • vibrant aftermarket support for the DIY'er

The question remains, are there alternatives, perhaps from BMW or Mercedes Benz, that are affordable enough to be an extended life fuel-economic car that doesn't break the bank and doesn't suck?

The fuel economic 1.4L gas Cruze, compared to any TDI, may not have enough power to satisfy current TDI owners, let alone offer light towing duties provided by any TDI.

It would be interesting to hear a diesel Cruze owner chime in, with respect to whether the diesel Cruze fills some of the vacuum left by the departure of VW from the US diesel commuter car market.

Quick question that doesn't appear to be answered in any of the sticky posts in this cars for sale section of the forum: Can I advertise two cars for sale as a package? Both mine for a long time, I'm moving on... Thanks!
