Has anyone thought of using a
Fumoto or QuickOilDrainValve like
http://www.quickoildrainvalve.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=F308L

It seams like it would make the change easier after the first time and preclude having to buy the VAS 6262 tool.

Are there any reasons why this would be a bad idea?

DSG Package II /w rear side airbags

PS Went from 505.01 to 506.01 oil at my last oil change. At this point (only 1 tank of gas) I've gained >4mpg increase...we'll have to see if this holds true, but refueling every two weeks means it'll be several months to see if it holds true.

The VAS tool is actually a tube you stick up into the tranny and by overflowing the liquid gold through that tube you obtain the proper fluid level. It is more than just a plug you thread in a drain-hole.

The bigger PITA seems to be all the hardware you have to remove to get to the filter housing at the top of the tranny (which creates the interesting shop bills people seem to get).

I don't understand

from the thread
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=169356&highlight=6262

and it's instructions and photos, I and lead to believe that the snorkel is already installed in the transmission and the VAS tool is a separate and distinct item designed only to fill the transmission.

Still looking to see why a valve would be a bad idea on the transmission?
Is there anyone with any experience with these valves that can provide feedback?

Thanks
Chris

Ok, so the snorkel is part of the car, not the VAS, my bad.

Still, if you put in a fumoto valve you won't be able to drain the fluid out during the change. The snorkel is what keeps the fluid in the tranny after you take the drain-cap off, only after you pull the snorkel the fluid drains out.

There are probably other ways besides the VAS6262. I reluctantly bought it. It worked perfectly (as it should for the $). I think I still came out ahead vs the nightmares and expence I would have had from having the dealer touch my car.

I made a fill tool for about 20 bucks, works great. I also have the 6262. It works very fine as well. See the dsg thread and there are a couple of homemade filler hoses.

All these problems could be solved if a dipstick had been engineered into the design. ;)

Draining and filling is the easy part.

Getting that filter housing off without removing the battery is a challenge, but really not much more difficult than removing bellhousing bolts on a BMW. You just have to get creative.

You mean that top bellhousing bolt that is unpossible to get to, and most older ones are stripped out already? :)

I am allways puzzled why my $80 compressor has a little glass window to check the oil level but a $25k car needs a dipstick (even better, I have an alarm that goes off if the washer fluid is low, but none if the oil level drops below 'min').

Well it would be much easier if they included the stick alredy with it.

Thanks for the insight. Your point in post 4 of this thread made me see the light.
Using a valve is only good for filling the transmission (aka VAS 6262) and for draining any overfill after getting it up to the right temperature.
It would not work to do the first step of draining all the fluid during a transmission change.
That's a BFO (blinding flash of the obvious) I apparently missed. LOL!

Thanks for pointing me to the make your own tool.
I guess one has two choices: drill out a spare drainplug like in
http://deviantspeed.com/diy-dsg-fill-tool-vw-vas6262
or use a
Fumoto or QuickOilDrainValve if you don't feel like drilling and tapping.
This forum is great. Thanks to all.

Maybe I don't understand the fumoto concept. You mean like reverse flow through a fumoto to fill up?
Now that would be interesting.

Yes

That was my intent since the valves are on off and do not contain any check valves.

I still think I'll get one.

I'll still have to remove it to drain the DSG, but filling it would be easy and then draining any excess easier still. Then it's wire safety wrapped closed until my next DSG service.
