I had a discussion with a co-worker about TDI's and longevity. His position was our cars will last no longer then any of the big three cars. I remember reading here a post about a properly maintained TDI will last almost indefinitely. I know there is a lot a members out there with mega miles on their cars. Anyhow I would like to hear about your car's high mileage.

Please chime in with your high mileage and the year of car!
I'm only at 308k  miles now on my 2002 Golf TDI and still too early to tell about it's longevity.

Your co-worker is misinformed.

1.2 million miles over 9 years is 130,000 miles a year, 11,000 miles a month, 360 miles a day.

That is by far the highest mileage TDI heard of

I was at the Portland fixumhaus GTG last year and I saw a white Golf TDI from the LA area with 498K miles I forgot the member name, if you are here come out of the closet. The car looked better than most of our cars that were at the GTG, paint was original and interior were intact, inside the engine looked like you could eat there, the whole car was beautiful, my jaw just dropped when I saw the mileage on the car and the way it has been maintained and looked.

By now it is probably over 500K miles, the member told me that the Golf does not burn any oil, that he has changed the oil every 5K miles and had been using Delvac-1

I'll have owned my TDI two years in about a month.

74,000 miles. One air bag replaced. One set of tires. 8 oil changes.

Compare to mom's fiasco focus, in 5 years/60k miles (note I did more miles in half the time) it had an airbag, ignition switch, valve cover gasket, three throttle bodies....

For historical sake. My mercedes benz (190D) had 401,000 when I bought it and drive it another 3000 before I sold it. Dad's 1986 American made (yes, a PA car) Golf Diesel has somewhere in the 430,000+/- range. The factory clutch died last year in the 400,000 mile range based on the previous owner's recollection of trips made after the odometer stuck at 355,000.

There was a 2005 Jetta TDI Wagon for sale in Alabama, 306,000 miles -- yes, 306,000 verified miles. Tiptronic. It still drove.

Coworkers MkIII TDI... ten years old, 235,000 miles.... turbo, power window motor, timing belts, oil changes, a couple sets of tires.... nothing else.

Is that enough?

I don't know what this guy does for a living, but he sure does clock a lot of miles.Good testiment to the guys who work on his car.
The only thing left original is the tranny, engine, and body/glass,pretty much everything else has been replaced at least twice.

The owner is Glenn Yamaguchi. I met him first at a GTG the VW dealership in San Juan Capistrano, then twice more at GTGs Harvieux held at Wild Rose in Fullerton in 2006 and 2007 (before WR moved to Whittier).

Glenn's username used to be Golfland99, but now he is Autostadt.

His white Golf had 378k miles in August 2006 -- I took a photo of the odometer. 413k miles in June 2007m from another photo of mine. This is what it looked like then.

My 2001 Golf TDI: 178K miles

It currently needs a heatercore, intake cleaning, turbo vane cleaning, and suspension work. I'll have my hands full this summer.

My 1981 Rabbit Diesel:

It currently has 316K miles on it. My father is the original owner.

I just turned 277,000 miles on my '97 Passat TDI and I wouldn't think twice about jumping in it and driving across the country. Lately it's been averaging 46 mpg, but I think it's due to the winter snow tires and crappy fuel. In the summer I average 51 mpg. Runs and drive very well and I love it. I pretty much rescued it from an early death of neglect and it's rewarding me well. I average about 750 miles a week.

Should we assume that since it is VWoC that wanted to buy the car back that the 1.2 million is in Kilometers, so that would be about 745,000 miles.
Dang... that is a lot of seat time!! :)

221,000 miles on a 1999.5, and I'm responsible for 200,000 of those. Two timing belts (well, soon anyway), a MAF, 3 sets of brakes - that's about it. Still trying to fix things broken by the dealer when they did the power window clips, though... Can't imagine a domestic car that will match this. And, a rattle-free interior!

745,000 is still nothing to sneeze at. How many Priuses will make it to the 750,000 mark?
And what will it cost them in batteries?:p

Had an 81 rabbit that quit in my driveway in 1993 at 388,000.
Currently my '04 pd wagon has 255,218 miles it still has it OE brakes and clutch. I did find out my lift pump was inop for at least 30,000 miles and replaced it at 252,000.

I wonder if it was being sold because the cam and lifters faied. I would be happy to get that amount of miles out of the cam/lifters on my pumpe duse jetta TDI.

My 2003 Jetta just rolled 200,000 last friday. Only problems I've had is the brake switch went out and the latch on the center console broke. Dang rear brakes only lasted about 160k;) but the fronts are still original. Getting ready to swap out the original auto tranny for a manual, even though the auto still works fine. My favorite car, ever!

I do all my own maintenance work, she's never had anyone else's filthy hands on her; I treat her right and so far the favor has been returned. I hope to make it to at least 500k without major problems, but plan to drive this car until it dies or my son, who is currently 4, turns 16. At my current rate the car will have around 700,000 miles at that point.

Just to update... mine's at 407,000 and change now. IP, injectors, suspension, rear brake pads/rotors and misc other things replaced at around 350K miles. After a timing belt change in another 10K I'll be good to hit half-a-million miles.

It's great to see these numbers. My wagon will hit 200K in the next few days, basically all of it driven by me. And it's still my first choice of what TDI to drive. I'm hoping for 400, even with the mods it has.

Our Golf has done 255 000km, nowhere near the mileage some of you guys have...
What has failed so far?
1 Coolant temp sensor
3 Glow plugs
1 spring at 235 000km(replaced all four)
1 Plastic belly pan
1 door lock (3 days ago)
1 brake caliper, seized guide pin, couldn´t get it off...
1 set of E-brake cables

Other than that just normal service and replacement of brakepads and one set of rotors.
Pretty good IMO!

All my VW diesels are low miles. 1981 truck- around 150K miles (don't know if original engine), 1981 rabbit 4 door car - around 150K miles also (swapped the original engine to a 1.9td aaz this summer) and my 2004 Golf is about 70K miles (just bought this summer). My brothers 1980 truck the odometer only goes to 99,999 and I think it says 80K (not original engine-swapped 30K ago), Father has about 10K on 2009 Jetta wagen. There was a guy in South Dakota with an 1981 rabbit car with 500K on it, 12 head gaskets and a clutch at 450K (original engine)

I got a little over 440 000 Km on my '89 TD IDI Jetta until a partially collapsed oil filter killed it. I do plan on rebuilding it though. I only have 284 000 Km on my TDI, so it's not too high yet.:D
