How much of a difference is there

Lightflyer1 said:
This is for the A5 model cars. Is this what you are driving? Your 99 NB doesn't count in this thread.
What is the MPG difference of an A5 verses an A4? I know my nb doesn't get its full potential because of some serious engine work done about 40k back. Basically a full rebuild. I dont think it was ever broken in properly. I average 46 MPG, what is the average for an A5?

That being said, 14.73 gals for 802, and I have never put more than 15 in. I don't even know if I could fit that much in.

Other than being lighter, and haveing a worse drag coef. what is the difference, really?

PS. This is the only 800 + club I could find:) I just felt the need to shout out my good mileage:)

okay, I am headed back up to Reno, and my wife will not be with me so I can go whatever speed I want. Only problem is that it hit 100F today, so I don't know about not using AC. I am going to try and see if I can do it without AC.

My trip to VA yielded my best tank/mileage yet: 863 miles on 14.843 gallons for 58.14 MPG.
My car now has 20,000 miles, I use Castrol 505.01, I inflated my tires to 43 PSI (max is 51 PSI), added 8oz PS Grey, filled up with Hess and off I went. Route was from central NJ to Charlottesville then to Lorton then to Chesapeake then back to NJ over 3 days.

The fuel warning chimed at 816 miles, I thought about going for 900 but I ran into DC traffic and needed to refuel. I am convinced that my car can do 900 miles on a tank.

WOW! I thought 53 mpg was good. I hope mine will do that when I get 20,000 miles on it. I guess there are two of us in the club now, and I am now number two.

The trip was almost entirely highway and I used cruise control most of the time, going down I set for true 61 MPH (GPS indicated) and return was set at true 56 MPH. My MAF is uncorrected but very consistent it is always 15% higher then actual, it indicated ~68.5 MPG for the journey which is almost exactly 15% higher then the actual 58.14. By the way my MAF is always set to display instant MPG while driving and I am always trying to keep the number as large as possible, periodically I check the average MPG to be sure I am driving efficiently over time. My car was broken in per Drivbiwire recommendations and I still mostly adhere to those rules.

Count me in... 818.6 miles

Seems to me the only way to make it is
1. A road trip of at least 800+ miles (all highway, no city)
2. A constant speed, say 60 mph.
3. A very level road most of the way.
4. No weather problems, i.e. no high winds, rain or snow.
5. No extra weight in the vehicle (luggage or passengers)
6. Tires pumped to the max.
7. No winter fuel, best fuel possible
8. Elf 506.01
9. Engine mostly broken in, no low milage cars.

Yep---that should do it.:D
Drive from Barre VT to Charleston WV.
up and down hills (lots and lots of hills)
average speed (according to GPS 59.0 while in motion)
speed while on the interstate normally 63-64mph
clear weather,
lots of stuff in the trunk for the wedding we were attending.
Rotella T oil
03 Jetta, RC2, 52k miles on the engine when we stared.
Fill the tank to the tip top before ya start.

818.6 miles.

I'm wondering what I can do when we add 506.01 oil and low roll resistance tires...

I didn't use the AC, but I will not make 800. It looks like I will make 750. I am currently at 620 miles at a little over an 1/8th of a tank left. But, I have 20% city.

I do the same thing -- I always keep the instant MPG on, and every now and then check the average. My best is 50mpg, but I only have 7k on the clock so hopefully there's some room to grow :)

14.843 gallons

This is like a record BY 1/2 gallon!!

I have never put more then 14.25 in mine...

I guess I need to go on a road trip and run like 45mph, then I could hit 900mpt...

filled to filler neck (could see clear diesel fuel in neck) - stanadyne additive added before fill in

530 miles right at 1/2 tank mark

833 miles and 15 miles left on the trip computer.

15 gallons refill (i guess i was really empty)

05.5 A5 100% stock, 65-70mph 75% hilly highway, 25% small backroads with occassional traffic light. coast in neutral during long downhills.. 65mpg indicated for the tank (reset at refuel)

at 65-70mph steady on flat surface i get 67mpg indicated realtime (way off 12+% vs. real consumption)

the warmer it is, the more fuel efficient the tdi seems to be...

What do you guys ( and gals) think?
At 1/2 tank I've got ~470 mile. I think this one is going to be close. The MFD has me at ~53 MPG ( corrected but it reads a little low) and ~340 miles left on the tank.

I would say you will make it. You will have to drain it down by 15.1 gals.

this is going to be very close, but i will venture to say you will not make it.. a prerequisite (at least for my car and driving style) is to be over 500 miles at 1/2 mark...

Just got my second consecutive 800+ mile tank: 809 miles on 14.766 gals for 54.78 MPG. The interesting thing about this tank is that the longest trip was 116 miles, all the rest was my normal commute to work ~72 miles round trip (80% highway).

You will probably be short. Last half goes fast. I think I had over 500 around half as well.

That is what I thought when I took my family on vacation. That trip, the best I got was 50 MPG:mad: . It didn't work out for me, but if you can keep the family quiet for 1400 miles at 60 MPH, god love you.:D
