...Can't get my rear hatch open with the switch, or the key. :-(

I've had the rear hatch latch mechanism fail in the in-latched position, but would assume it can fail in the latched position.
Assuming it's the latch, you can releases the latch from the inside, but have to crawl into the rear cargo area, partially remove the hatch panel enough to get your had in there to manually release the clasp.
Google for a DIY on replacing the hatch latch to see some pics of the area.
