An interesting bit of badge engineering from the early '90s...

According to Wikipedia, the 2WD version was made in Germany at VW's Hanover plant, while the 4WD version was made by Toyota in Japan.

Blatant badge-engineering, too.

It's so obviously a Toyota HiLux/Truck/Tacoma that it's not funny...

If a Toyota had a VW badge on it, would Consumer Reports slam it as unreliable?

Only the 2WD version.

Any coincidence that the Pontiac Vibe is GMs most reliable vehicle (according to CR).

I wonder what's involved in td'ing or tdi'ing one of these things... I'd bet anything they used avw motor and a toyota drivetrain, now where do we find THAT adapter?
My inlaws have one with the 22re in it, I'll have to have a close look at the trans.

Acme Adaptors sells an adaptor to mate a VW 4-cylinder engine to the transmission for the Toyota 22R family of engines.

And, yes, 22R is easier to swap on, because 22RE has more electronics.

Note that the 22R family's rev range is freakily similar to the VW diesels, FWIW.

Exactly....a Toyota with VW power train. Very popular in South Africa.

The Taro was diesel only--- that was the catch. However, it used a Toyota diesel.
The picture in the first post talks about both gasoline diesel engines being available......however, no manufacturer details of the engine.
