It's so easy a caveman can do it. I just made that up.:D

No problems.

The physical swap is pretty similar, same locaton but the 9W3 and 9W7 modules are slightly in shape, no big deal.

I looked around for some wire installation threads but could not find them, they could be out there, but you'll have to take a look, sorry about that family commitments.

Based on the number of people who have done the swap and have never heard feedback from a person finding this very difficult. I guess that sounds a lot like trust me :), you'll have no problems.

I'd never promise that as everyone has difference skill and comfort levels, but again, there have been probably several hundred people who have done the swap and I never hear of problems.

Cheers and what ever route you choose.

I have a 2010 jetta tdi cup edition with a stock 9W3, bought a 9W7 and i only get streaming audio out of the right side speakers. i have been given the following info about what I/(people going from 9W3 to 9W7) need to do to fix that issue but i have not had the time to do the repair. i have the wire repairs now and just need to find time to test and install correctly after i know it works.. maybe someone one can beat me to it with some pictures as well. I hope this is correct and helps

If you want to DIY harness, here are all the parts. You need 2 VW repair wires and just cut them in half, solder w/your own extension wire in the middle, and plug them into the existing connector. Connect pin 5 to pin 5 and pin 11 on the radio to pin 4 on the bluetooth.

12 pin connector (6×2 rows) – green- 3B7 035 447 B (3B7035447B) – telephone end

Repair Wire 0.5mm – 000 979 009 (000979009)
pin 5 – telephone audio input signal left negative
pin 11 – Telephone audio input signal left, positive

54 pin connector (18×3 rows) – blue- 4E0 972 144 (4E0972144)

Repair Wire 0.5mm – 000 979 010E (000979010E)
pin 4 - Audio LF Signal out +
pin 5 - Audio LF Signal Out –

Update: New Module works fine , verified :)

Hi Gang,

Well its been verified, the new 9W7 module works fine, Mr. Timewise was kind enough to do a thorough comparison between the two modules. IN summary the operation of the two units is virtually identical with a few minor tweaks. I copied the email I received in its entirety for the benefit of others.

If anyone needs a module, I still have them, some have a few scratches on the underside of the case. Since the module is hidden there are no aesthetic issues to deal with, and the modules are still fine function wise, I warranty against them being DOA for sure :)

New lower price :)

The price shipped for these units would be $275 in the US.

Here are his results:

Steve,

I can report that there are very few difference between the 7P6 035
730C. (I have a "7P6" with SW 0440 and HW 05.) None of these
difference are of any real significance.

---

The only changes I noted in the MFD+ menus was in the main "phone
connected" display. The 5K0 035 730 shows the name I had assigned to
my cell phone: "Jack's Motorola..." (there's a limit on the number of
characters). The older 7P6 on the other hand only shows "Motorola L2"
(the type of cell phone I have).

In the same "phone connected" display, the three connection symbols
are the same ...battery level, phonebook, and (something else)...if
and only if the paired phone sends the information. This is not a
change from the 7P6.

As far as I was able to determine, all other MFD+ menus are the
identical between the two modules.

---

The sound of the female voice is identical. However, there is one oddity...

In my 7P6 the female voice pronounces the word "Phonebook" as
"Phon-book". That is, the "e" is not emphasized. This correct
pronunciation applies to the system's own recorded word "Phone" as
well as my cell's saved phonebook entry such as "Home Phone".
However, I had previously reported that I occasionally I would hear
"phon-ae-book" when "phonebook" was spoken. Maybe this is unique to
my car, because other 9W7 users have never heard the odd
pronunciation of the "ae" that I reported many months ago when I
first installed the 7P6.

Anyway, the new 5K0 always says "Phon-ae-book". This includes the
system's own help menus, etc.

This is not a big deal, of course, just something I noticed. I do
find it odd that of all the words the system pronounces, the word
"phone" is the one word you'd think the system designers would get
correct.

There are other pronunciation anomalies that are identical in both
units. For example, the word "John" sounds more like "Don". And the
word "Rich" sounds more like "Rick". The important thing is that both
units sound alike 99.9% of the time.

---

The new 5K0 does have a few changes to the help instructions.

For example, when you say "Help" upon activation of the Push-To-Talk
button, the voice starts out by saying, "To call a contact, say, for
example, 'Call John Smith at home'."

The 7P6 on the other hand, mentions this command later in the help
instructions. Also, the wording is shorter: "Say, 'Call plus a name'."

There is a more detailed verbal description of how to connect to
Bluetooth in the 5K0. The system says, "To connect a mobile or media
player, say, 'Bluetooth Visible'." The 7P6 on the other hand, simply
says as one of the verbal commands, "Make Bluetooth visible."

The 5K0 also has a clearer Help description of how to make the
system's reading of the phonebook entries at some point other than
the first name in the list. Both units can do this, but the 7P6 help
menu isn't as clear in this regard.

---

The older 7P6 does allow me to press the PTT button and simply say,
"Sheila" to call my spouse. (Her name is only typed into my
phonebook...not as a voice tag.) The system immediately says,
"Calling Sheila" and then dials the number. Other names in my
phonebook require that I say, "Call office" and then the systems
says, "Do you want to call office?", whereupon I must answer, "Yes"
before the call is initiated.

On the other hand, the newer 5K0 always requires that I confirm a
repetition of the phonebook entry before the call is made.

Very few people have reported the ability to simply state a phone
book entry and have the system dial the call immediately.

---

The 5K0 allows you to enter a "voice tag" for a phonebook entry just
as does the 7P6.

---

The only other thing that I noticed in the 5K0 is that upon first
connecting the hardware and turning on the car, there was a rather
long MFD+ message stating,

"To start using the system, first take your compatible cell phone and
activate the Bluetooth function, and make it visible. Then start the
device search in the vehicle. Please refer to the owner's manual for
further information."

This only showed once.

It may be that any 7P6 will also show this message too. But since I
had hooked up my 7P6 before having the MFD+ instrument cluster, I had
not seen it previously.

---

The VCDS coding in the 5K0 is the same as in the 7P6. As with the
7P6, there is the requirement to enter a "work shop code". I used the
same code as had been in my 7P6:

Shop #: WSC 02172 444 59389

This info is permanently part of both units now. But I can reset
either unit to factory default in all other regards. Resetting the
9W7 to factory default is a command entered verbally or the MFSW
buttons. This will erase all phonebook entries and voice tags.

---

As far as I feel, the operation of both units is virtually identical.
The only disappointments of the 5K0 is the odd mispronouncing of the
word "Phone" and the apparent inability to make a phone call simply
by stating a phonebook entry.

I recently received my 9w7 (thanks for making that happen Steve!). I have the "older" 7p6 module and after nearly 3 minutes of installation time, all works well.

Timewise, I am also hearing the phon-ae-book pronunciation, and there was no first-time connection message.

I am a bit frustrated that now I can no longer stream bluetooth with my ipad (haven't tried anything else). I was able to do that with my previous 9w2 and RCD510 setup. Anyone had any success with BT streaming with an ipad? Maybe the 5K0 does this or a firmware update is forthcoming... I find it hard to believe that a device that worked with 9w2 won't with the 9w7.

Now that I am up and running, I will have to spend some time going through this thread to figure out all the options, settings, and usage tricks...unless there is a link to a manual somewhere.

Installed in about 30 seconds

I ordered a 9W7 from a guy in Europe on ebay for about $200. Shipping was slow, but arrived yesterday and it took about 30 seconds to install. The original 9W3 in the early 2010 TDI Sedan had a metal enclosure without a foam holder and the new 9W7 was plastic. There where 3 10MM bolds holding it to the floor and they lined up nicely with the 9W7. The A2DP and voice integration is terrific. I think since I have an early 2010, there is only right channel A2DP audio, so I'm going to run the second set of wires this weekend. NBD. Thanks for all the info on this thread!

9W7 on a VW TOUAREG T1 2004

I want to install a 9W7 on a TOUAREG T1 2004 (the first touareg). I have a RNS CD (the oldest version) I am only interested in using the MFD menus, and I only need the navi to MUTE when someone is calling me. Will the 9W7 be able to communicate with the color MFD of the Touareg?
Thank you!

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but does the new 9w7 bluetooth have caller ID? I was listening to a song on the MDI when a call came in and the radio screen asked if I wanted to enable bluetooth audio. I couldn't actually see who the caller was. Does it display on the radio or the MFI? I didn't think to page through the MFI

Have 2010.5 Jetta TDI with 9w3(I think) and MFSW package.
Will 9w7 module fit and work properly? Will codes require changing?
Where can I purchase one?

Many thanks:)

BTW are you happy with voice quality, etc?
Also my car has the Premium 8 radio, not rnc-510, but does fine with voice commands with MFSW & 9w3. Assume this radio will have no problem with 9w7?

Many thanks again:)

Everything is just the same if not better. It also adds a bunch of features to the cluster. If you had the RNS i think it adds some features for phone to the radio, however i have the RCD as well. Voice command is a little weird but it works, you just have to get used to what to say. I have an iPhone 4 and it has too many voice command options. But overall I am very happy with my decision to change to the 9W7.

Installed the 9w7 about 3 weeks ago from FLYTDIGUY. All works well except for the voice command. Went to my dealer yesterday to have him look at why the overhead PTT button was not working. He had it on VCDS for over two hours trying various combinations of codes, but couldn't figure it out. (He also tried to code the MFSW without success) I had my laptop showing him some of the posts with install instructions, posts from others with coding. He suggested I ask the forums for help - or call Ross-Tech.
If anyone has my specs and has done a successful 9w2 to 9w7 switch, please send me your coding.

Many thanks!

Behavioranalyst,

Did you ever find the solution I am experiencing the same issue with a 2010 JSW TDI RNS-510 firmware 1000 after installing the 9w7. Everything works except the PTT buttons are not functional on either the headliner or MFSW even after coding it using the vag-com.

Also the bluetooth button in the headliner does not function to show a searching mode in the MFD nor does the mute button work in the headliner during a call. The headliner buttons functioned as usual wth the 9w2 (in there limited capacity).

Other than that the 9w7 works nicely.

Thanks,
Brandon

Anyone know how/if I can get my phonebook to display on my 2011 radio?

I purchased 2 Jetta TDIs last week. One 2011 TDI for me and one 2012 TDI(premium) for my wife. Both cars have RCD510, 9w7 bluetooth, and voice dialing. The 2011 does not have a phone menu and the 2012 does. What would it take to make the same as 2012?

do I need to get newer RCD 510 w/phone button to have on screen dialing

Upon more investigation I found the 2011 has head unit 1K0035180AD w/5K0 035 730 and the 2012 has 1K0035180AE w/7P6 035 730 F.
If I get just the head unit will that be enough to have phone book and on screen dialing or do I need both?

A note to all...Please take your time while plugging in the electrical connector. Never force anything.
There has been a report about someone who installed the 9W7 and found that everything worked fine, but there was no audio from the person on the other end of the call. It turned out that there was a bent electrical pin in the socket on the side of the 9W7. This likely happened the first time the multi-pin connector was plugged into the side of the 9W7. The problem was fixed once the connector was removed, the bent pin located and straightened, and the connector re-installed.

Sorry for the "vulgar" cosmetic question... But has anyone finally figured out how to make the console bluetooth light work with the 9W7?

It seems the firmware inside the BT module does not make the overhead console LED light up. The electronic hardware is built into the BT module (I've opened the BT module, traced the PCB, and analyzed the components) but the firmware does not direct the LED to illuminate.

In case you haven't read it elsewhere, or have not received a letter in the mail, please know that there has been a class action suit filed and accepted by the courts regarding the incomplete functionality of the 9W2.

It's called "Christensen, et al. v. Volkswagen Group of America, Inc". and alleges "VWGoA's advertising and product descriptions misrepresented characteristics of the Bluetooth system in Settlement Class Vehicles."

Note this is a proposed settlement, but most likely will be approved by the court. Once approved, VWGoA will reimburse (parts and shipping) those who have upgraded to a 9W3 or 9W7 by themselves. Or if you haven't already upgraded, VW will have a dealer upgrade your 9W2 to a 9W3 or 9W7 if you so wish. (It's unclear which one, but most likely a 9W7 for cost reasons and the greater functionality unless the 9W3 fits better because of existing wiring. Details are not revealed in the documentation.)

Go here for details and court dates:

New module installed - from class action

Just had new module installed today at the VW dealer. Blackberry paired right up. Older Motorola KRZR paired up. Fired up IPAD 4 - connected up and blew the Motorola off the VW Bluetooth module. Turned on Pandora on the IPAD and streamed music all the way home.

The new VW bluetooth system was able to negotiate between Pandora 4G streaming on the IPad and receiving calls from the blackberry and negotiate between.

I checked out module at home and 9W7 not installed. Module installed was the following:

USA 051 473
SW: 3510
HW: H15
Model: UHV
HCD: SJA 25/12

Too bad, so sad for VW it took a lawsuit and 2 1/2 years to finally get handsfree correct.
