We have a 2004 Touareg TDI (V10) and love the car, when it drives well. Lately it has stopped accelerating, especially when in 2nd and 3rd gear. Sometimes, when we stop and restart the car it will work well and shifts perfectly. Anyone else has the same/similar problem?
Also, we live in Seattle and want to get it fix, any recommendations are welcome.
Thanks

You need to find someone with VCDS (VagCom) (there is a list here in the stickies at the top of the page) and have it scanned for codes. Have them scan the car and post the results file up here for all to see.

Hi,
we have had our car scanned for codes and wonder if you can look at it and help us determine what is going on. Thank you

I couldn't figure out how to attach the analysis so I am just pasting it below:

Hi Tom/Tereza,

From your scan, it looks as if you have codes stored for both turbocharger control modules. If the turbochargers can't accurately control boost pressure, the engine will be down on power either due to low boost or due to "limp mode."

You also have several codes for glow plugs (cylinders 1, 2, and 5), which you may want to have addressed at some point, especially if you're experiencing cold start difficulties.

At this point, I'd recommend clearing all codes from all control modules (this takes some time to complete), driving the truck for a couple of days, and doing a full scan of all control modules again. That will clear out any old transient codes, leaving only the ones that are current problems, and pointing you in the right direction for repairs.

Good luck from a fellow 2004 V10 owner. :)

how are your batteries? looks like you have a low voltage reading. If your batteries are low multiple strange things will happen. That would be the 1st thing I checked before getting to deep into it.

I had the issue on one of my 2004 V10's. I replaced the N18 valves and it cured the problem. Also if you don't know the condition/ age of the batteries I would go to the dealer and get two new ones. A lot of intermittent problems are solved with fresh batteries and keeping them on a battery tender if not used daily. Also use a tender as a monthly routine if you drive daily.

This is what works for me...

Good advice. I'd also recommend using a battery charger any time you're working on the truck with the ignition on and the engine off (for example, when scanning with VCDS). The electronics consume a lot of power, and while the V10's batteries are big, you can run it down pretty quickly when it isn't running.

Thanks everyone.
My take away is to 1) get new batteries (existing are about 3 years old), 2) get all codes cleared, 3) drive for a couple of days, 4) re-scan and post new code results both here and on clubtoureg.com, 5) keep in mind the N18 valves solution, possibly/ likely some glow plug and turbo-charger issues.
By the way car starts fine and every now and then runs with the original acceleration (but the nows and thens are happening less and less).
Thanks so much, Tom and Tereza (Seattle).

Hey guys I think I have a similar problem with my V10. It keeps going into limp mode and I'm driving a v10 with no boost. If I turn the car off and restart I can sometimes get 1 blast of acceleration before limp mode again. VCDS says 18360 turbo control module 1 is the cause.

I first checked my battery voltage, the batteries are 3 years old according to the date stamp. The battery under the seat showed 12 volts and the rear battery showed 12.3 volts.
While I probably could have charged them, I read too many low voltage problems with touaregs under 12.5 volts that I decided to start fresh. New batteries are at 12.6 volts. Cleared all faults with vcds but still get the 18360 code and limp mode.

I took off the control module to have a look. digital corpus and I are working on a fix for the actuator. I'm waiting on parts from Germany to come in for the attempt at fixing. I'll update once we try it out.

Thanks Temporaptor. it would be really great if this solves your problem - Would you mind keeping us posted on the results? Limp mode is a perfect description.

Unfortunately it didn't solve my problem, i haven't really had any time to look into it more due to my crazy work schedule right now. I may try a used actuator next. I'll update as information comes in.

I bought a used actuator on eBay, didn't fix my problem, but now I'm getting a differnt code.
19791 control module 1 for turbo charger
P3335-000- missing message

Still no fix yet.

Refurbished Turbochargers

We are replacing both turbochargers on our 04 Touareg (TDI). Do any of you have an experience using refurbished ones? We are considering that due to high cost.

Considering how much it costs to pull the engine out, I would be putting in the best possible parts I could find. If you buy cheap turbos and they fail 20,000 miles later, you're out another $3,000 to pull the engine to replace them again. You won't save money by buying cheap parts, especially something as labor-intensive to work on as a V10 TDI.
