Default HELP!! Need to help a friend with a stranded TDI in Moncton

Hey folks.

A co-worker of mine had a rough trip over to Moncton on the weekend and his car is currently sitting at the Canadian Tire in Dieppe. Here are the details.

2002 Golf TDI 5-spd.

When accelerating onto an exit ramp shifting from 4th to 5th gear, it blew a whole pile of black smoke and "took off" in VW runaway fashion and then died. When attempting a re-start, he said that he just would get sort of partial turn overs of the motor. Sounds like inter-cooler oil build up? Any other thoughts?

Where can he take this to in Moncton? Canadian Tire hasn't looked at it yet and luckily doesn't sound like they are going to be able to today.

I've got Cam's Auto Repair. "EDIT" neve mind Cam's.....his # is disconnected.

Anywhere else you fellow New Brunswickers can recommend?

Barry

Default Dan Dobson

Just called a friend of mine who lives in Amherst. He uses Dan Dobson (Private shop) apparently used to work for VW

and is very happy with his work.
The shop is just outside of Moncton.

I think he's fixed up. He talked to Canadian Tire and (luckily) they don't work on diesels.

He is getting it towed to Autobahn Auto Haus at 438 Paul Street in Dieppe.

German name.....must be a good place!

Soooo out of curiosity, what was the result of your friends outcome? I mean what needed to be fixed?

Oh, sorry for leaving you hanging. It was a result of a botched up timing belt job and the timing was off. I think he said it was putting out too much fuel.

I believe they just opened it up to have a look at the belt and its components and snugged everything up for him to ensure it was done properly.

Lucky it wasn't worse and a good lesson that back yard mechanics unfamiliar with TDIs should never even open the hood on one unless they are putting washer fluid in.

Honda got it right when they said, "Don't open your hood to strangers"!
