Friend is in the market for a vw, he does a lot of highway and needs the mileage of a diesel. Any one care to share their thoughts on a 2014 vs 2015 VW be it golf or Jetta, standard vs auto vs DSG?
Any advice appreciated.

The Mk7 is a huge step forward / upward from the Mk6.
There was only one year of Mk7 TDI - 2015 - and only the Golf / Sportwagen, so that pretty much eliminates the Jetta.

DSG - meh. I'm not a fan, but with a tune, it's more palatable. I'd still always prefer a 6MT. My wife, OTOH, loves never having to shift, particularly in heavy traffic. So - depends the driver.

Trim level: Again, totally depends on the driver. Lots of folks here prefer the base level because there's less stuff to go wrong. I prefer the top trim level because the sport seats in the SEL/Highline are a HUGE upgrade over the S/SE trim level; and the sunroof. (Again, some people run in terror from sunroof, but even living on Vancouver Island where we get plenty of liquid sunshine, I'd have trouble owning a car without one).

Buddy of mine has a 2015 Jetta TDI, how is it classified under the mk system? I know the 2012's and 13's had intercooler condensation problems? Anything to worry about with the mk7 golf wagon as in major issues vs the older ones?

2015 Jetta is a Mk6 - same as the 2010-2014 Golf TDI (from a platform standpoint).

VW learned a lot on the Mk6 and applied that learning to the Mk7 - much more refined, and to this point anyway, seemingly fewer "showstopper" issues.

Also, the Mk7 TDI will have a 11yr. / 260K km warranty on anything touches fuel or emissions (basically, all of the engine / turbo / AdBlue systems).

I've had both a 2014 wagon and a 2015 wagon. We like the 2015 better, it seems to be better on fuel and nicer inside.

The 2014 wagon has a few advantages on paper like an independant rear suspension, larger gti sized brakes and a physical traction control button.

They're out there, but you're probably not going to be able to be super-fussy with regards color or transmission. And with limited availability, probably not a lot of negotiating room.

the 2015 has EA288 engine in it so how is it the same as 2010-2014?

Only the 2019 Jetta is on what would be called a mk7 platform as it's finally on the MQB platform.

2011-2014 Jettas TDI are considered "mk6 jetta", def not to be confused with anything related to any golf ever. Even the 2015 is still a mk6 jetta it just shares the MQB 288 engine of the mk7 platform.

The interior and over all car of the jetta was significantly cheapened in 2011 to meet price points, thus they diverged from the Golf platform.

I'd only conditioner a '15 mk6 jetta if the price was smoking cheap compared to a similar priced golf/wagen.

Rereading it I was comparing a Jetta sedan to a golf wagon, the OP may be comparing a GSW and a JSW, but just didn't clarify.
