Went to the water slides with my boy this afternoon and when we got back to the car I thumbed the remote unlocking the car and then the hatch... As I'm loading the trunk my boy says "Papa unlock the car!" Ummmm I did kiddo try it again. It's still locked he says. Ya ya you're just tired from the slides and the sun here let me try  JEBUS!!

Well no amount of locking/unlocking with the remote or the interior button will release the door. The 'LOCK' light is on steady and I'm stumped. We have that particular door child locked but that's a mechanical lock and not electronic.

Any insight is greatly appreciated so I don't have to go see the dealer!

I've actually been having the same issue. Do you have VCDS? mine only happens every once and a while and I think it may be related a loose wire or something as I've removed the door cards several times. I actually looked into it today and was able to resolve the issue by wiggling the wires. I'm curious to know if maybe there is something else causing the issue though. Ill keep an eye on this for sure.

dealing with locking unlocking issues as well, (i had left rear door issue just like yours, now i have the front passanger door that won't lock) take it to the dealer asap to have them eat the repairs, sadly i'm sitting at 42K and need to solve it my self.

BTW if you unlock the door by pulling the inside handle, you should unlock it. I did spray lithuim grease in the rear door lock and it seems to have corrected it as of now.

interesting to hear that we've all had identical issues like this. What did the dealership do/replace for you when the issue came up? I'll for sure give the lithium grease a try and see if perhaps the lock is just sticking/getting caught.

VCDS was giving me 2 errors, one regarding the lock motor failing to respond and another regarding the rear central locking not working (which is related to the one door not working). I've also had a similar issue on my other rear door, but it has mostly resolved. I haven't seen any issues with it for a month or so. I think I'll give the grease a try and see where that puts me.

dealer hasn't done anything for me as i'm out of warranty. Others have had the same issue and either dealer replaced locking mechanism or window regulator that has mechanism in it or some other part to fix it, not sure which part.

just for clarification, did you just spray the locking from the outside? I just want to make sure you didn't open it up and lube it that way. Also, how long has it been since you've noticed the issue and attempted the repair with the grease?

Oddest thing is the boy tried to open it from the inside today (child locked) and it unlocked the door but didn't open it...

I called up my dealer and asked if there is good faith warranty work. They stated they'll look at it and most likly split the cost on the repair. He also stated I shouldn't have this issue on a 2010, but they know about failing lock mechanisms is pretty common.

I've twice had issues opening driver's side rear door. Both times I found the child-lock switch (insert key in edge of door when door is open) was between the two settings. 1st time...I thought...that's odd...maybe came that way from before I got it. 2nd time I asked my kids and was sure to turn it both ways and firmly put it in the "normal" position. That was several months ago. I dunno...it's possible you have a similar issue? If I recall, problem was that my son could not open the door from the inside, but, when unlocked with the clicker, I could open the door from outside.

hope this helps

I had a similar problem that I managed to solve. The driver's side rear door would not open from the outside intermittently. I was driving with passengers but using the rear seat for storage.

Arriving at my destination the rear door would not open from the outside intermittently. I would have to use the remote or driver's door buttons to unlock the rear door. So, I went into the MFD and changed the default from unlocking only the driver's door to unlocking all the doors. Not really logical but thought worth the try.

So far, the rear doors are not locking themselves anymore.

I sprayed into the area of the door where the latch engages. I've heard a groaning from the locks (most likly this one) for probably 2-4 months before just spraying it.

Just now, i pried off the lock dust cap on the door above the latch, I saw the red "actuator" move about 2 out of 5 times cycling the locks. When it did move it was slower than ther others, so there is def mechanical issue that might not be resolved by lubing it up. I might try and rip off the door cards and see what's what before going to the dealer.

sadly, you cannot see much with the door cards removed, the lock and all the mechanics are in the door itself, so you'd need to remove the plate that everything is mounted to to see anything useful.

I already have all my doors set to unlock on their own so I don't think this is the issue. I've also pulled the error in VCDS, and as mentioned previously, receive a message regarding the door motor and the switch having issues. If anyone else is able to pull the codes, it might help to compare. Ill post my exact errors as soon as I can.

I just pulled the codes, and disabled the auto lock at 10MPH (unneeded wear and tare on the locks IMO) I barrowed a coworkers VCDS, he'll email me the codes pulled tonight and I'll post them tomorrow.

It looked like I had codes for every door except the drivers. Pulling the door card looks like will be the hardest part as I don't want to break any trim. I think I have the tripple square needed to pull the lock if needed. Either way it'll give me something to do.

My passenger rear lock assembly is on the way, Ordered it today. I have replaced the other three already for the same problem. Same groaning noise then they just stop working. Very common issue, very crappy lock assemblies. I am getting pretty good at it. The door skin off, latch replaced and back together in less than an hour.

Faults for door locks, so looks like it may be a communication issue once with the rear doors, and a mechanical issues with front passangers and left rear.

I didn't have time to pull my codes last night, will do that this evening. Those codes are very similar to mine. The thermal protection is from cycling the locks too many times. I've had that one too while trying to troubleshoot the issue :). I've scheduled an appointment to have this looked at, but it will be a week or two until they can see it and then more tiem to order the parts (my guess is they don't stock these).

I had the similar problem with my front passenger like a month back - they replaced the latch assembly.

Last week it happened to rear driver side - I had to take it in for 20K service - they replaced the latch on that one, while they were looking at the codes - they found that there were fault codes for the driver door as well and replaced parts for that also....

Lovely! Now it won't lock  Have to called the dealer and see if we can get it in on Friday.

last week the dealer replaced the left rear on good faith, as it was malfunctioning at the dealer. The right front was working fine, so I'll take it as I had 44K on the clock and they could have told me to pound sand.

In looking at the cars owned by the people participating in this thread, it appears that this problem does not affect the MKVI Golf but rather Jetta SportWagons and Jetta Sedans (when I see "Golf Wagon" from our Canadian friends, I assume this is a Jetta SportWagon).

Is this true? Or are MKVI Golfs similarly affected?

Maybe the weather stripping is slightly different on the golf that's preventing the issue on them.

I just bought a 2010 Jetta Sportwagen TDI with 46k miles. I'm really excited about this car but tonight i find out after having the car for a week that the pass front and driver rear door are not locking. other doors are working appropriately. I know i'm out of warranty but if I have to eat this repair how hard is changing the actuators? Is there a DIY some where on this site with how to?

I got it apart. Inspected module. All pcb and wires good.

Reassembled. Door unlatched and latched OK. Hit the lock button, it locked! And the rocker turned yellow! Yay! Pulled on door, no open! Yay! It locked!

Hit the unlock, rocker turns red, edge of door makes noises, and now door wont open from inside or outside handle, and dealer wants $2000 to cut open door panel and body work.

I was further ahead to not even investigate it. At least I had 4 doors that would open.

Hm?

I got my unopenable door to open.

When I tested the module and reassembled I accidentally set the child safety from inside, which disabled interior latch. Upon closing the door, I tried to lock. It clicked and feedback to ecm registered with the lock logo glowing orange instead of red. Yay. Right? No.

Tried to unlock, electric motor was too pussy to drive the worm gear, so the outer latch was disabled.

End result is a door that cannot be opened from either side.

So I bought a new module, and tried to get the door apart, long story short, don't reinstall that plastic cover, because it would of been so much easier to reach back there and manually move the red lever (as if the door was open) to overcome the lock so it'll open from outside .

I didn't install it with new module. And test with a scree driver before closing the door! Worry about door close sensor last.

Only weird thing I noticed, is I have to pull the interior latch twice to open from inside if locked.

One pull to unlock, a 2nd pull to pop latch.

Is this normal? Other 3 doors don't lock since purchased car , so i wouldn't know. Haha.

It is now 2018 ...

And my 2004 left rear passenger door lock has had this issue ... TWICE. I was driving around with it for over a year, unable to open the door from inside or outside. I would roll the window down to access the seat for use with groceries, etc. No children or rear seated passengers, so not a concern, until we thought about selling it. The repair consisted of an entire "new" door from salvage yard. The shop charged me almost $450 for the repair. That was almost a year ago. This past weekend it happened again, only this time there was a rear seated passenger who could not open the door from inside. Thinking there was a child lock activated, I opened the door from outside, and it opened. But somehow the door clasp/lock hook mechanism had "closed", and could now not engage the latch hook on the car itself... it would just "bounce off" when attempting to close. I had to tie the door closed from the inside to drive it home. Attempted using a screwdriver to pry open the lock mechanism while using the key fob, lock buttons in car, pulling the door handles ... nothing worked. Eventually had to throw a tarp over the door and roof, as the rain was relentless. In the dark using a flashlight, I disassembled the door panel inside. Accessed the locking mechanism and could easily see there was a cable with some type of hook that was just dangling there. Took some needle-nosed pliers and pulled it, could hear the lock/latch mechanism "click", and saw that it had moved now to the open position. Saw where the hook attached to a small metal/plastic eyelet. Attached it. Lock worked now. Reinstalled the door panel assembly. It still works today, a few days later. I will be hesitant to open this door ever again!

Door won't open, 2013 SportWagen

Hi all,
I recently had a door won't open issue with my 2013 SportWagen.
Unlock doors with keyfob and all doors openable except rear passenger door. And since I had the child safety setting on, unable to open that door from the inside.
Saw this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGyb9aSoIFA that describes how the mechanism needs to fully return in order to reset the lock. Thought that this might be my problem. The video suggests physically pushing the cable & latch to its full return position by inserting a slim tool between the glass and door. Rather than try this, I just pulled the outside handle to its maximum displacement and let it go letting it "slam" back. Doing this twice, the door opened on the third pull. Door has been working OK since but I've disabled the child-safety feature just in case it acts up again.
Hope someone finds this helpful.
cheers
Albert
