I thought it would be neat since everyone on this site enjoys their TDI that I would share an experience I had today.. It's not much but it has teeth in my book..I was at a light next to a Honda Prelude, the guy had the big A** obligatory tach sitting on the dash like he races 50 people a day so I thought hmm.. Let's try out the new WETT technology that I also just installed today( thanks to the lovely Kelly at WETT) "the guys windows were down and there was no doubt that he heard my DIESEL , and I'm sure He had a pretty good Idea that he was going to tear me up.. The light turned green..hehe.. I was only in first for a sec, then second a for a little WETT pull, then 3rd for alot of pull and by the time I got to 4th, the lude was about 4 lengths behind me...AMaZing!.. The dude started honking in frustration knowing he just go burned by a DIESEL.. haha.. I plan to find a few more unsuspecting victims to make up for a few losses I incurred before the WETT chip was installed...
Now you might think i'm crazzy.. I've been through the whole gas turbo scene, and they were quite fast,, but nothings more fun to me these days than going out and opening unsuspecting eyes to a little (MGDTT) Modern German Diesel Turbo Technology, hehe...

My latest attempt was against a Highway Patrol trooper. I lost.

All: Actually, my stock passat has little trouble dusting most medium and large "sport-futility vehicles", especially V-6 powered Ford Explorers with the vinyl tops and "Al Capone" running boards so popular in the Philadelphia area. Little tin boxes from Japan and Korea are also "automatic kills"(Daewoo, Kia, Suzuki, Geo-eoo!). However, I am waiting in anticipation for BIG GAME- the new Ford Excursion! From what I have seen of the performance figures, the $50,000 , V-10 powered, 7,700lb., 11mpg "wunderwagen" doesn't have a PRAYER against a TDI. These folks are the ones who say they could never buy a diesel because they are "too slow." As I love to say..."if you can't run with the SMALL dogs, then stay on the porch!"

I had a similar experience before I got the Hopa Module. Some YAM (Young Asian Male, and before you decide to flame me, I'm a NSYAM-Not So YAM) punk kid in a Honda Civic Hatch with his bubble-gum smacking GF in the passenger seat. The car had stickers all over and it was slammed with wheels and 5" exhaust pipe. He heard my diesel clatter. Light changes and I pull out easy but then punch it. We're almost side-by-side to the next light. At the next light, I can hear him rev up the motor in anticipation of the green light so I give it throttle as I let up the clutch (normally, I let out the clutch before stepping on the accelerator), wind it out to 4000, scratch as I let out the clutch in second, and I'm at the next light first. The next light, I figure that I need to be in the far right lane and decide to let him take off and just cut over. He was so humble at that light that I just took off like normal and cut over in front of him like I was going to Sunday school!

It only cost me fifty bucks. He singled me (the slowest car) out of a pack and zapped me with his little laser toy. He said he clocked my going 78 mph, but my cruise was set at about 72 and we all know the VW speedometer reads fast. It was just a "yellow paint tax", but I expected a certain amount of that when I bought the car. It's a good thing he didn't clock me going UP the canyon, 'cause I was doing about 95! I don't bother to speed DOWN the hill because any idiot can do that. (It takes a special breed of idiot to speed uphill, I guess. I am that idiot!)

Mickey,

And the speed limit was? ( Just checking for my soon trip through Utah. Oh, and thanks for being the example!)

Never had a ticket yet. Want to keep away from that as long as possible. (However, I KNOW I will get one, because I just can not keep my Jetta from going over. It is SO easy.)

I'll tell you what, both my WETTED TDI's feel like they have AT LEAST 150-160 HP engine under the hood. In fact I have driven many cars putting out 200HP that DO NOT feel like they have as much power as either of my VW's. Of course the TDI sign off early, but then you can shift earlier too and it is into the sweet spot instantly. I'd say the TDI would beat any car putting out 150HP and give a good match for most machines putting out 200HP.
My TDI's both feel like small block V-8's, even more so than V-6's, plus they get unreal fuel mileage in the mid-40's on up. Simply amazing....

A modified unchipped TDI will hold its own out of a stoplight launch compared to a 160hp Volvo 740 turbo w/automatic.

Now a modified Volvo 740? That's a totally different story, but the TDI is more fun with twice the fuel economy.

Thanks Mickey. Sorry you got one. I hope to learn by your example. Lets see, Ah I got it! Don't be the slowest one!

Hmmm.... My sixth sense says this might not be the answer....

Thanks again!

If you go fast enough, they won't be able to catch you in the first place. Anybody care to try it?

BB: A two-wheel drive with a Powerstroke would probably be a bit quicker than a stock TDI, but I'm here to tell you there's no way a one-ton 4x4 will even come close to catching the Evil Beetle! They are impressive machines, and produce staggering amounts of torque, but they also weigh as much as a small cargo ship. My dad insisted he could beat me until he drove my chipped Bug. That was the end of that fantasy. Evil Beetle is just plain FAST. (I LOVE MY CAR!

mickey,

Speeding uphill is the best place to take full advantage of the torque and pass others.

The special breeding required is called logic and intelligence. As an interesting coincidence, TDI's happen to be the apex of the automotive logic and intelligence curve, and their owners represent that quality. However, the officer who decided to rout you out of the a pack for state funding probably drives a SUV for a personal vehicle. Which, as we all know, rates much lower in the curve...

Well, another victim tonight.. Not like I go asking for trouble, but a little late model V6 chevy pickup definately wanted some tonight. I was sitting in the double left hand turn lane and this guy next to me is looking in my window and revving.. It was time to !@#!@!, the light turned green and I revved a little higher than normal and blasted the clutch,, I took off floored with a super fast shift to second and the tires were breaking loose around the corner.. hehe, third had him nicely beat,, I stopped at the next light and the guy gave me a perplexed look like DIESEL ?!?! WHAT THE %$#$%@@!

Mickey may be King of the Mountain, but new member ‘brads’ is becoming "King of the Stoplight." (I’m enjoying this thread immensely.)

For what other car can you read stuff like this, then flip over to the mileage thread and for the same engines read about sub-4.0L/100 km fuel consumption?

Answer: NONE!!
Comment: Awesome!!

Mickey, didn't you try telling him it is a diesel?

"I'm sorry, officer, but my car is a diesel. It has the highest fuel economy rating in the US. It can't possibly go that fast."

How about NB with Wett vs NB TDI stock? I drive the same route every day at the same time and lately I have been seeing a stock NB TDI. Last week, she was in front of me while entering the hwy. She was accelerating quite hard, but not hard enough, so I went around her. Today, she was in front of me again. This time she really gave it all she could, I saw first hand how much smoke a stock TDI can produce. I did it again, I went right around her. I have the TDI badge on the back, so she knows that I have one. I just hope that she doesn't go to her dealer thinking that there is something wrong with hers.

Peter,

I have never had a ticket, but your defense is what I am practicing when I get stopped. I also am trying to get a tear to drop on cue. I doubt it will help...

The diesel excuse will only work uphill. Even an old Rabbit IDI would do 78 going DOWN the canyon. If, and when, I get caught at 90 to 100 mph going UP the hill I plan to try that one out on the judge. I may even invite him to drive the thing. Does anybody know a quick, simple, and revsersible way to sabotage a TDI's performance without lighting up the dashboard warnings? Preferably one that causes smoke to pour out the tailpipe like we're back in 1982 or so.

p.s. It'd be my luck the guy would be subscribed to this forum.

Mickey, sheesh, I knew I forgot an important point!

I almost always go fast up hills and slower down. Even in my gas cars. My theory has been that if I hammer the car for a shorter time, it will not overheat and cause me to throw my thumb out. So far it has worked. Now, in my 91 Escort (may it rest in peace) this would work fine unless someone slowed me down. Then all bets were off. It did accelerate well up the mountain. The TDI is a different cat. I am really enjoying it.
Course, my silver Jetta might blend into the background better than your yellow evil beetle, I hope..

Mickey: You want to make the TDI go slow? Its easy, just disconnect the MAF and the car will have no boost. It'll be like an old Rabbit Diesel.

When you want to return to normal, turn off the car and reconnect the MAF.

Try it, and you'll see.

Keith.

Ran into my first 99 VR6 today on the road, played with him a little bit and then hit it on the onramp and let him have a little upper respiratory air sample of what the coal burner has to offer.. I suspect he never fully believed what he was seeing, but there was a small chance he might have thought I was another VR6

I also had the happy little bahn burner up to 120MPH last night on the open freeway here in the valley outside of Los Angeles, nobody was on the road and I thought I would try it.. I have never felt a more rock solid SMALL car at speed than this,, and can only imagine what a few suspension mods would do to make it sit happily down..simply AMaZIng!

Brads, just don't play with a VR6 on the freeways. We top out at around 120-125 while those things keep accelerating to something like an electronically limited 145 or so.

On Monday, I was a little late for work and was driving aggressively and noticed that there was a Jetta GL that was doing the same up ahead. I caught him on the final stretch of my drive and zipped past him. He was winding his poor little motor out but I just drove past him. Bad TDI, BAD!!

I am more concerned with how the car pulls from about 30miles per hour on up.. I am running into more rolling street races nowadays than standing starts, or freeway pulls, It just doesn't make sense to spend time at super speeds due to the obsurd low end pull, and the TDI has more torque than most gas cars do at those speeds,,

I just wasted a Z-28, It was an older one, and the guy was fully on it at the light..., The guy he was attempting to race was to the left and he was on the right, and I was right behind him on the right at the light, Well when the light turned green, he stomped on it and the poor guy next to him fell behind, meanwhile I was right behind him, I went for 3rd gear and made a power pass to the left to go around him and put a few lengths on him, when he suddenly turned off on his street behind me... I also suspect he never knew I was a diesel, since I was passing him hard in third and was never idling next to him..hehe.. Better luck next time 80's V8s

All: Since there was concern about "drag racing" on another thread and potential accidents I think a clarification is in order. Like most of you (I suspect) most of my "dustings" are in very safe situations, usually in 3rd or 4th gear. The most satisfying "kill" I had was outside of Scranton,Pa. on along, uphill 4-lane climbing stretch at very high altitude (for Pa.). Although carrying 4 people, the combination of torque and the turbo getting sufficient air to the engine was an unbeatable formula. I never got the car above 60, but the other vehicles were struggling to maintain 35 or so. It was the most devastating display of real-world, USABLE performance many of them had ever seen...I could tell by the look on their faces!

This morning's victim: Some hot headed Park City punk in the Audi 90 Quattro he inherited when daddy picked up his new Lincoln Navigator. The Quattro traction allowed him to get off the line quicker, but the Evil Beetle quickly caught up and blew him away. At the next light I got the "looking straight ahead and pretending I wasn't really racing" routine. I guess them Oakley sunglasses and that backwards baseball cap weren't quite as aerodynamic as he thought!
