For the 97 Passat TDI does anyone know the "easy way" to go about purging the water out of the filter? Any ideas on Filter life and recommended (by users not dealers) changes. Are ther any precautions that will alow the procedure to minimize the entry of air as the water drain "plug" is loosened?

I have 40K Miles and the last VW service was at 30K.
PS: Was it the 60K service when VWAG recommends replacement of timing belt.

Timing Belt: VW used to recommend a 60K interval. The new ones call for 40K.

Water drain: If you live in a dry climate and buy fuel from a reasonably busy retailer, you probably don't have to worry about it. I just changed my filter at 20,000 miles and I didn't notice a drop of water when I drained it.

I would assume that draining the water reservoir would not allow air into the fuel system. I'm not sure about that, but it seems logical. If you change the filter every 20K miles I really don't think it's an issue.
