Hey guys. I need to swap my cluster. my car has 135xxx miles an the cluster I bought has 403xxx (lucky guy). Although id love to be able to tell people my car has 400k on it, I need to keep the mileage genuine. can I take the gauges apart and swap odometer chips? or is there another way to get the 'new' cluster to say 135k?

You need to find someone that has a program for mileage changing. You basically plug into the car, or cluster on the bench sometimes, and reset the mileage.

It is a specialized program, not VCDS, and probably wont have nay luck at the dealer. Try a local independent VW specialist. Vag-tacho, codecard, or others are compatable and can do it.

Derek at Chubbs auto can reprogram mileages on these clusters. Good work and quick turnaround. I've used him before - he come recommended around these parts for cluster work.

Also, Derek can program to the exact mileage, while vagtacho is only to the nearest 16 miles if I recall correctly.

If you have a hot air rework station or good soldering skills you could just swap the serial eprom from the old cluster to the new one. The serial eprom is where the mileage is stored.
