Oops, title should read 1.5D.
I got my junkyard ALH from 99 Jetta running on the stand! First try with the modified harness, the one mystery wire turned out to be a ground. Went through the diagrams at least three times, it paid off. I have some specific questions about the swap, I hope someone can answer them:
Motor mount
Anyone have a source for 74.6mm tubing to make a passenger side engine mount? Or is it worth it to buy a pre fabbed one? The rubber is inserted in with a press, so the mount must be smaller for an interference fit, but how much smaller? I pulled off the 1.5 mount and can cut it up, or wait for the right car to show up in the junkyard, just would rather not.
Starter
If I want to use the 020 do I use the original starter? I have the ALH starter. The ALH block starter mounting holes are a larger diameter than the 1.5's, do I drill out the 020 holes for the larger diameter bolts or use a nut on the block side with the smaller bolts?
I guess I can see if the starters are interchangeable if I compare the flywheel diameters and teeth, or put the 020 back on the 1.5 and try to fit the new starter with the old bolts.
Glow plugs
On the glow plug relay there are two signals that go to the computer, which one is which, or does it matter? A search results with posters saying that they go to the computer, but are not specific. Are they interchangeable? My motor was running, so I guess I got it right?
Alternator light
Can I hook up the new harness' alternator signal light to the original light on the dash or will that break something/not function correctly? Does the light on the MkIV do the same thing as on the MkI? I have a 79 diesel Rabbit.
Glow plug light
Same thing as the alternator light.
Tachometer
How do i hook up a tach? Can I use one of the three signals from the crank sensor or is modifying the alternator the solution? I'm thinking there are easy to find solutions for this already posted.
Oil Cooler
I thought I read that the front engine mount interferes with the ALH oil cooler lines, is that true? I can check this tomorrow pretty quickly, actually. Any known solutions, or just get creative with the coolant lines?
Similar to the starter:
I want to use the 020. The lower bolt holes on the trans to oil pan mounting are threaded on the 020 and the ALH oil pan. But, the oil pan threads are a larger diameter. Would you use the smaller bolts, or drill out the transmission?
