Am I correct in my understanding that the difference between the 1Z and the AHU is just the turbo and MAF ?

Is everything else the same?

I was ( pricing - for fun) motor mounts from the stealership. They needed to know if it was 1Z or AHU - why?

that's not really the case...there are other differences.

Do you know what kind of car you have and what model year it is?

Hi there- just look on the top of timing belt cover in engine compartment also. Tells what engine, when made, etc. Also give stealer your vin # when ordering parts- they should be able to tell from that what engine you have.

MAF is the same. Injection pump is different; so is the ECU. There are others, but the above are the main ones.

This has not been conclusively confirmed, but VW had published an SAE paper in 1997 (#972686 IIRC) that detailed the changes of the TDI engine for North America for the 1998 model year, including different pistons, higher pressure injection pump and some other internal things, but it wasn't clear if it applied to the AHU or the first ALH that first appeared in the New Beetle for 1998.
