I was reading some wear that the Valvoline SynPower meets the 505.01 standard so I sent a E-mail to Valvoline and this was there reply

Yes, our Valvoline SynPower Full Synthetic SAE 5w40 does meet the VW 502.00, 505.00, and 505.01 specifications. Valvoline part number #vv966.

Do a search - there are several members using this oil - the first UOA was average.

This oil was available at local auto parts stores until Volkswagen approved it. Now all you can find is the Synpower 5W30, which isn't approved. A triumph in market timing by Ashland Oil.

I found it in Walmart after I found out that Castrol Edge in the black bottle is not 505.0(1). However I looked at my cam and even though I used the Castrol Edge 505.00 for 90,000 miles it looks good.

I have been using Valvoline for awhile and I think my UOAs have been above average. Wear rate was less than M1TDT. However I am using a mix of 5w40 and 20w50. The 20w50 states that it meets the requirements of 505.01. Both also have MB229.51 on the label. I buy mine at O'Reilley's. I bought quite a bit on sale about a year ago for 3.99.
