The big difference up here is that you can't really get away with untreated stone chips. I think you have more time to deal with them in a climate where the roads are coated in salt for 4 months of the year.
My 91 Mercedes 350sdl has zero rust - it has seen a winter in years and years. But her 04 Passat just had $4000 in rust repairs (warranty) as it's been principally used in the winter since it was new
