I've said this a couple of times already, but I will say it again. I used to buy Delvac-1 from Flying J--but they wanted $33-36 a gallon. I then found distributors that sold it for ~$22 a gallon--usually only if you buy by the case. Follow this link to find a distributor near you.

Unfortunately, the 1st link is old and needs updating by Mobil.

According to this list on the 1st POST HERE: a Unocal 76 in Ontario, CA has Mobil Delvac 1.

When you call them a different story imerges: they told me: WE DO NOT STOCK MOBIL OIL! We're Unocal 76....

Sorry guys, just found the link. Did not call all the stores to check about prices /images/graemlins/grin.gif and if they still are selling Delvac 1.
Also, in Wisconsin, there is one more delaer for sure who does sell Delvac 1 and it's ~$20/gallon.

North of L.A. is a guy I called and has 50 cases on hand:

TOPANGA OIL 15372 COBALT STREET
SYLMAR, CA

(818) 364-9466

that's about 85 miles from me and I don't want to drive that far! But if you live nearby - there you go!

This is old news, but Mobil 1 5W40 Truck & SUV motor oil is repackaged Delvac-1. Now available at Kragen's motor parts in California, Schuck's in Oregon, and soon at auto parts stores in your neighborhood. $4.95/quart.

So no reason to ever pay more than $20/gallon for Delvac-1 synthetic.

Now it appears that any Kragen, Schucks, or Checker auto store has Mobil Delvac 1 in quarts for $4.99, labeled Mobil 1 Truck and SUV.

I'm leery about buying repackaged oil and hoping it's delvac 1. I guess I'm a little unconvinced that you can buy it under a different name and pay less. Yes, I've heard you can buy it from Caterpiller and now as this Truck & SUV stuff. How are we so sure?

Of course, I'm quite new to this diesel game /images/graemlins/wink.gif

Mobil Delvac 1 DOES NOT MEET VW 505.01 spec

I had a conversation with Mobil Tech Rep today and he insisted that Mobil Delvac 1 *does not* meet the VW 505.01 spec.

I've been using this stuff since I bought my 2000 TDi Golf new in June of 2000: many on this site recommended it and I made my decision to use it.

I lost the turbo at 113,000 miles which is a shortened life for a turbo.

I'm changing to an oil that meets the 505.01 spec ===> That turbo was REALLY EXPENSIVE!!!

Does your 2000 Golf TDI require 505.01

Maybe you need to talk to the PD owners that lost camshafts to 505.01.
I know somebody who lost 2 turbos in his PD in 150k miles using 505.01.
What's your point ?

GoGolfing, there are folks with 300K+ miles with Delvac 1 on VEs, I suspect it was something other than the oil that caused the turbo failure.

Who diagnosed that your turbo was bad?

Turbos fail, sometimes, and sometimes they fail because the oil feed line to the turbo leaked and the turbo didn't get enough oil. But no turbo ever failed because it was lubricated with Mobil Delvac 1 5w40. Sometimes they fail because of dirty intake air, sometimes they fail because of overboosting, sometimes they get replaced by dealerships even when the turbo is perfectly fine. I suppose the use of a conventional 15w40 might cause premature failure, but lots of turbos seem to last a long time even when that oil is used.

Your Mobil rep was right -- Delvac doesn't meet VW505.01 and it doesn't need to. No one ever said it did, and no one ever said your 2000 MY TDI required a VW505.01-spec oil.

A4 requires 505.00 per VW owners manual

When I originally bought my 2000 VW Golf TDi in June 2000 - I joined Fred's TDI page and Mobil Delvac was one of the most recommended oils...

I did lose my turbo at 113K and it cost me mucho dinero$$$ even avoiding VW Stealerships (I did give them a shot at my business to which they all replied "We'll charge you $1800 for the turbo even if you have service done on the premises"

I've been looking for a decent and available substitute oil for a while.

Your turbo failure and your lube oil selection are unrelated.

Who said Delvac meets any VAG spec

GoGolfing, and on the same note that Mr. Dorf brought up, VEs don't require VAG 505.01, VAG 505.00 (per VWoA) or any VAG spec oil. Nor does Delvac 1 meet any VAG specs, just API and various engine-specific specs.

K5ING has 400K miles using mostly Delvac 1 in his VE TDI.

Concession?

I concede that I cannot directly and conclusively "blame" my turbo failure on Delvac I (rated for compression ignition engines) - I still maintain it's a good product but now it is unavailable from Mobil.

I'm going to start reading posts on which is the best oil to run my 2000 VW Tdi and hopefully find something that is somewhat "available".

Also- when my turbo blew - I had the intake cleaned and it was fairly nasty but not the worst I'd ever seen. I'm going to perform an "ectomy" and prevent the intake from taking all this crap down it's throat. What a regrettable design...

CarQuest and NAPA can order Mobil 1 5w40 for next-day delivery to the store, if they do not have it in stock. O'Reilly's may carry it, I haven't been in to check. AutoZone is a crapshoot.
