Iam really sick of my noisy vr6 clutch, its driving me crazy. Anyone have a mrkIII with a noisy clutch and managed to quiet it down. Very interested in maintaining my sanity.

Is this with a lightened flywheel?A friend put one on his 1.8t and at idle with the A/C turned on it sounds like a diesel.

It isn't with the lightned flywheel it is with any solid flywheel replacement. The stock flywheel has rubber sandwiched between the plates to act as a spring does in the sprung disk that you now have in the setup. That rubber took alot of the engine vibration out of the mix that the solid flywheel can't do that is why it make the noise that you here.

I assume we're talking about gear rattle at idle?

The only solution is to put the cheez-whiz dual mass flywheel back in, and hope for the best.

I'll take the gear rattle.

Whoa, I never had the flywheel replaced, as far as I know according to other members the stock flywheel for a mrkIII jetta is the G60 flywheel. That is the appropiate setup for a vr6 clutch upgrade. Hmmm has no one else had this problem. I guess that is the case in which I should probley visit a transmission specialist. I thought maybe the rattle might be a loose mounting bracket on the clutch. Any thoughts anyone. Oh to clerify when Im at idle and I push the clutch pedal in the noise disappears and when Im accelerating it cant be heard over the sound of the engine.

My dad thinks dual mass flywheels are the greatest. They go out on just about every Carrera 2 and 4. He replaces them with a solid one from an RS. What he really likes, is the final bill for doing that job. $$$

It's normal. The firing pulses of the engine are transfered into the trans input shaft. The noise you hear is the lash between the gears.

Stephen, I have a 97 Jetta also with the VR6 rattle. My solution is to turn up the radio, sorry...
To clarify, yes the 97's have a solid flywheel to begin with, and it is the install of the VR6 clutch that gives them more gear rattle. I really don't know why but it does.
Mine is very audible since I have my lower pan off, is yours still on? If not it may help to reinstall it. No other ideas

there are a few companies that will build you a custom plate and disk. Your are talking about a motor that can put out FAR more torque than any gas engine, something like 300 lb-ft to the wheels, performance parts behave like performance parts.

The only thing that works for me is...
1. Play the radio louder
2. Roll up the windows
3. Whistle while u drive
4. Go to the gym, work out with the left leg extensions and practice holding a spring loaded peddle down to the floor when you're at red lights!

My 98 has the same chatter, although 70k miles later it seems to be more quiet. Then again I don't sit and listen for it like I used to. That chatter is music to my ears though. It's the sound of no slipping despite being chipped, bleeding and now phat injectors!
