Hullo. :D

Have got myself a quite tidy PD130 spare head and am contemplating getting it ported, and fitted at the same time as my (soon to be) rehoned injector units go in.

Anyone actually ported a head on a TDI?

Yes. First one's about three years back.

Maybe you should take contact directly with 68corvette to get it right the first time.

And what comes to porting the inlet of a tdi head, don't listen to gasser porting guy's what they have to say. The exhaust can be made with common style.

Ideally I want to send the head to someone in the UK to get it done... I'm going to have a word with Allard during the coming week. The cam I have fitted is supposed to give porting characteristics, but why not do the real thing. :D

Have a spare pd130 cam if anyone needs one. :D

I Recomend 68corvette too. My curent head has been ported by him, and the next head I'm going to test will be his work aswell.

I would like to try porting the cylinder head on my 5 cyl 2.5 Volvo 850 tdi. I have to take the head off as the cam belt has failed and hopefully if there is not too much damage I will repair and port at the same time. (I have a spare head.)

Does anybody have some advice on the port sizing, and especially whats the deal with the swirl on the inlet side? Can you have too much swirl? Are ther any place where you need to be careful not to break into the water jacket? Does anyone have any pictures of port castings?

Many thanks in anticipation.

If you are going to try this yourself, the best thing is to smooth out the surfaces and blend out any casting ridges or corners, without making any change to the overall shape of the intake port. The swirl-generating shape is extremely important. You CAN have too much swirl, but the mistake that a "gasser-think" person would make is to remove the swirl-generating shape; that would be a BAD bad thing to do.

Very easy to *lose* power via porting, by doing the wrong thing.

Another thing - very large "hogged-out" ports might flow better on the flow bench but won't necessarily work better in the engine. You need velocity in the intake system to produce a "ram" effect that stuffs a bit more air into the cylinder after bottom-dead-centre, if the whole system is properly designed.

It looks like I've found a UK based porting specialist, who has done TDIs before as well. Looking forward to seeing what he can do. :)

I ported mine, only the exhaust runners and polished the intake ones..

I made the exhaust runner radius 1mm bigger, I smooted the inner bend alot, fixed the valve stems but did not cut them, I wish I took some photos of the work..

Hey Rub,
What were the results of your porting efforts?
Can you feel the difference? If so, all across the RPM band?
Any difference in economy?
I've done mild porting myself, on gassers, and have liked the results to cost ratio! :)

yeah, although I've also been recommended a place near Northampton too.
260hp.. thats nice.
Hatemi went just a little over 100mph with his Golf IV on 1/4mile, but that must be because he is still tuning the engine =)

Have you tried what your car goes mph on 1/4mile? Seems like they are weighting pretty near the same, skoda is ~50kg lighter.

I will dyno in 2 weeks..

But I did the porting the same time as the vnt-20 install, so I can't really say what the differences are..

But now I'm stuck with a boost leak in the intercooler.. can't weld it because its between the fins, and I tried with some kind-a putty but it still leaks with results in some smoke and a bit less power..

is TSR PERFORMANCE still open? there in somerset. Not sure if they do just gassers though, could be worth giving them a ring.

I was there yesterday. :D They don't get involved in diesels to be honest and they don't do their own head porting. I will go direct to someone (eventually :))
