Talking with my local Citco station manager yesterday. He told me they test their fuel on a regular bases and it has to be a minimum of 51 cetane. This is do to a contract they have with a couple of local business. So if you are in the Greenfield Indiana area and need good fuel stop by the Citco station on West US 40.

OK, got it.

We have Citgo diesel in this area and Citgo supposedly is going to offer a hi quality fuel in the future. This was not scheduled to occur for another year or two, as I recall.

I emailed Citgo and they said all they do on current fuel production is ensure a cetane number around 42 - - nothing more, nothing less.

I have asked station owners a few times in the past what the cetane number is and have been given some wild numbers. Upon checking with the fuel supplier, I have found that the station owner's claim is nothing more than nonsense.

Greg, perhaps in your area the station is not using CITGO to acquire diesel fuel. I guess some stations do not retail the fuel exclusively from the organization listed on their sign.

You should ask for some form of substantiation from the owner...perhaps he can actually produce evidence. That would be great news for you guys.

If your local station guy is telling you his Citgo premium diesel is 50 cetane he's smoking crack. I've been researching the subject of premium diesel heavily lately, and spoke with citgo's diesel fuel specialist(at corporate) and he informed me that the only difference between citgo diesel #2 and citgo premium, is the additive package - and their additive package contains NO cetane improver, only lubricity, thermal stability, anti-corrosion, etc. He told me that their premium and number 2 ranges from 40-42 cetane. Either they carry some other brand of fuel, or the guy's trying to make a sale.

I don't think its Citgo brand gas. But he said they had to supply the 51 minimum for some contracts. They are a large supplier in this area and I have know reason to debt his word. I do know one thing and that is the TDI runs better on the Citgo than the stuff I get at the truck stop on the interstate.

ooohh.......was forced to fill up today with a delicious grade of Exxon Crude with the old "40 cetane minimum" label on the side. Good thing I still had half a bottle of Diesel Kleen left, because I used it all. Yuck. As for Citgo, it varies by area. I think it's around 45 here, but definitely no 51.

Check out Ag One Coop EP24: 230 W. Osage St., Greenfield, IN 46140, ph (317) 462-5551.

They are listed as a supplier of Countrymark Fuels, who inturn refines/manufactures Premium Diesel-R with a cetane index of 50. Call the station to verrify if Premium D-R is at their station. The refiners home page has a dealer locator and product spec. sheets.

I have used CO-OP a few times, they are just down the street from the Citgo. But the TDI really does not like it as well as the Citgo. Not sure whats up with that if its suppose to be 50.
