Out of the blue, cruise control on at 65mph, suddenly the diesel rattle was louder than the tire noise, wind noise and Howard on the radio. I had done an oil change 40 miles prior, I immediately pulled over, checked for leaks, level, etc. All good. No CEL, but still the VERY LOUD diesel rattle. After re-start, got a CEL, (VAG-COM, laptop on board) and got the "17656 Start of injection timing Regulation", reset, ran properly. Next time it did it, I checked timing, it was advanced off the graph.
It's been back, I've reset. It ran 1,000 miles with no symptoms (I KNOW they don't cure themselves ) and was running fine when I shut it off Friday. Started it this morning, and it was LOUD (obviously advanced) and CEL on. Only once did it go into full blown limp mode, glow plug light flashing, no throttle response, just a fast idle, about 1200rpm.
My question is: could a bad #3 injector signal create this? The car is 2001 ALH 5-speed, 462,000 miles (I've driven since new) NEVER any Boi or accidental gasoline, filters changed on schedule.

Not all codes are present each time it fails:
