California Buyback Question

My registration comes due 9/2. It states I need to smog test my vehicle to complete the registration.

I have my buyback set for August 28th.

Any reason I need to smog it prior to the turn over? I take it, if the current registration is in force, even if only for a couple of days before it expires I'm good?
