Recurring code

Hi all,

I keep a pretty good eye on my TDI with Vagcom, and a code has appeared that appears to be significant (see below). Trying to clear it just causes it to come back immediately. My TDI has about 101k on it, this code appears to be tagged to an event that occurred around 84k. The car seems to be running fine! So, is my instrument control module bad, or does this code have some other meaning?

Thanks,

Steve.

If you don't have any problem with instrument cluster I would just ignore it.
Yep, I'm leaning in that direction, but the computer engineer in me is curious about the reason for the code, when everything seems just fine. I drive my TDI about 120 miles a day and it's just purring along. I do, however, totally depend on the car so I don't want to ignore an important issue or let stuff build up.

If I understand what you are saying, you are suggesting ignoring the CEL because you have determined it is not a problem. If so ask yourself this: How ill I know that something new has come up and the light can't let you know it now has a new problem since you are ignoring it.

Joe,

I'm not suggesting I ignore the code, nor have I determined that there isn't a problem. Let's just put it this way -- if there IS a problem, it's not obvious. That code has appeared for a reason, however, and I would really like to know what that is so I can make an informed decision about what to do.

The OP didn't say anything about a Check Engine Light. A fault code and a Check Enging Light are not the same thing.

Have you owned this car since new? Or more specifically, did you own it when it had 135888 km on it?

Yep, I'm the original owner. My TDI is heavily pampered and I keep a close eye on stuff. I scan with Vagcom once every few months or so just for good measure. Although I can't be certain, I believe I did a Vagcom scan a few months ago, which would probably have been after the 135888km mark, and I never saw that code. In any case -- the code is there and doesn't want to go away. As far as I can tell, the instruments are all working normally.

That cluster has been replaced in past , correct?
Other strange thing is it shows 135888 km/84K miles in that first post when fault was present.
How long ago did you scan that?

Found an old repair receipt from the dealer when it was still under warranty. At 39k miles, the instrument cluster was replaced because the multifunction display kept going blank. I'm absolutely certain that I've run several Vagcom scans since then, never seen this error until just recently.

The fact that it shows 84k miles as the failure point (the car currently has 101k on it) is indeed odd. The other strange thing is that the car seems to run just fine, and I'm still not able to find anything wrong with the instruments, unless of course it's something that wouldn't be visible.

I've gone back through my records (and my sketchy memory) and it's entirely possible that I haven't scanned the car in a while. I put 120 miles a day on it since moving to Arizona a few months ago. It's possible that something went wrong at 84k miles and I just didn't pick it up until now.

Still .. I'd likie to track down the cause of this and cure it. There's a reason that code is being thrown...and a reason it can't be cleared...

Steve.

Just for the heck of it, I did a complete rescan. The results are below. There are a couple of intermittent codes that are back since yesterday -- the door control module stuff. The radio codes I know about, it's due to the installation of wiring for an aftermarket sub. Those codes have been there forever and are caused by the break in the radio speaker wiring for the subwoofer tap.

Joy, joy...looks like I'll have to investigate the door control module codes as well.

Steve.

It is something going on with software in cluster.
Please do this.
Take picture with current miles on car.
Disconnect battery for 15-30 min. If you know take out cluster for 5 min.Put back cluster ,Connect battery back and see do you have same miles on cluster. If roll back to 84K then cluster is bricked out.
If is stays same , then check is it code there.

Here is the good thread how to pull cluster out:

Understanding this is an older 2012 thread.... Our (ordering owner) 2006 TDI pkg 2 w/navi Jetta is having a similar VCDS error code fault. Control Module, 014 Defective.
Same instrument cluster part number, same version number, etc. Although there are a few instrument cluster malfunctions; will not allow setting of the correct time, winter tire speed, etc. 90% of the cluster is operational. lighting, speedo, RPM, gauges, etc.

OP - in the end, what was your resolve? .. I'm about to replace the original 1K0 920 973 DX instrument cluster,, for the current VW replacement. With discount its about $450. USD

I don't think you will get an answer from the OP. Good thing to check on old posts like this.

@1998993C2S - Is 1K0-920-973-DX the current cluster in your car? If so it's not original, as the X at the end indicates rebuilt.

The processor does a memory self check when it firsts powers up and sets a "control module defective" fault if the memory check fails. My guess is the memory location where those functions are stored has failed. Not much different than if you boot up an older computer and watch it do its memory check before Windows splash screen comes up.

Jason

PS; it means you have to replace the cluster and program the keys (unless you have Immo delete)

Many thanks for answering my cluster post. As for the instrument cluster's part number with an X suffix, my records do show a cluster replacement in the 4th year of the TDI's new car warranty; ..4yr/50K mi. .. Who'd a thunk the dealership would use a remanufactured cluster unit? .. Likely such language in the new car warranty fine print.

Anyway, the instrument cluster operates fine during general driving use,, All goes kaputt when selecting any of the steering wheel user convenience items. .. As an example when selecting say, winter tire, nothing happens. (winter tire speed alert/alarm)

Is there any hope of having this cluster serviced? I'll ask TDI fellow member/vendor: Jetta ,97

Only time new parts are required is before car is sold new. Any time after that re-manufactured parts are acceptable. Actually it is very common and sometimes new parts are not allowed unless reman are not available.

In this day and age it is very uncommon to find some one with the ability and parts to do that repair for less than the new part costs.

The memory data for my Pkg2 w/navi instruments clusters "Settings" feature is stored where? Any clues?
Using the VCDS to run through the operation of the cluster, (RPM, Speedo, idiot light warnings) is limited. The data for the "Settings" menu is elsewhere. Any clue?
